Met a lovely little girl today called Siri. British origin.

Has anyone ever heard of it? Is it short for anything? It is rather pretty but my brain keeps going “hey Siri! When is the next bus into town.”

Maybe her real name is Alexa but they call her Siri as a nickname?

MongerTruffle · 04/11/2017 20:50

It's a name from the Nordic countries.

There's an American writer called Siri Hustvedt, who I think is of Scandinavian origin. Maybe named after her ?

I know a Siri short for Siriol - it is a Welsh girl's name, means happy or cheerful.

There is a Netherlands and Everton ladies footballer called Siri Worm, don't think it is short for anything.

Yes, Scandinavian. Not short for anything. Lovely.

stellarfox · 04/11/2017 21:31

I know a Siri and it’s her full name. iPhone’s Siri is unfortunate.

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/11/2017 21:32

I also know a Syrie - like the French spelling of Syria

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 04/11/2017 21:34

Yes I've known a Syrie too.

Please don't call your child Syrie or Syria.

A game I’m playing has a character called Ciri which I think is Greek.

There are a couple of Siris in DH's family. He's Norwegian. It's not short for anything.

There's a Norwegian model called Siri Tollerod too.

Borttagen · 04/11/2017 22:07

In Sweden it is the traditional shortening for Sigrid.
