Torn between semi sensible (normal) and a bit out there

For our boys name we have always been set on Milo, however lately I've noticed a lot of Milos, I don't know if its just me picking up on it more or if its becoming more popular. Theres also a Milo in hollyoaks now.

Another name we like is Kip, its kinda earthy and unusual and perhaps a little bit out there.

Middle names will be rupert or forrest or both.

Either way our parents/families will probably hate both names but I am torn with what to go for. I'm only 30weeks so plenty of time to decide but some input would be useful!

Other options:

Tip
Pin
Chik
Lip
Wiz
Bip
Tik
Mip
Fim

All quite like Kip and equally on the 'not a name, not even really a word, WTF?' list.

Short names have a have a habit of being lengthened though. I worked with a Lucifer once...

I had a thought about an earthy country gent type name... Seth! One syllable and a gorgeous name.

NataliaOsipova · 02/11/2017 12:51

99% of Mikes are actually called Michael

Exactly. And were you to fill in an official form with "Mike", you may well get it returned with "full name please". I had a friend called Terry to whom this happened regularly!

KalaLaka · 02/11/2017 13:01

OP you probably can delete it if you msg the moderators. Try not to be too hurt by any of it. Choose a name that's right for your baby, that you love. I would have lots of negative comments about my children's names, so I just don't ask anyone what they think!

LyndaLaHughes · 02/11/2017 13:17

Please don’t get upset OP- I think people are just trying to be honest and their reaction is pretty indicative of the reaction the name would get across the board. Kip does have a few connotations that aren’t great. I’m a teacher and have seen first hand how cruel children can be about names and making fun. I have to be very honest and say I think Kip is a name I think that would attract derision from others. I think it’s the kipper link that is the worst. But I can imagine the mickey taking for the other meanings as well. I really would think long and hard before saddling a child with a name that could cause issues. I do think it doesn’t work on an adult. It sounds like a made up nickname for a child. I’m sorry but I’m just trying to be honest and I really wouldn’t- I think it would be unfair on the child.

Evelynismyspyname · 02/11/2017 13:47

Seth is a fantastic suggestion!

Itsasecret I think people are just trying to save your baby from being called Kip, sorry! It just doesn't have to connotations you think it has, for anyone else. The thread has shown you that nobody else thinks "country gent" when they hear Kip, and that most people have far less positive associations and assume it is a nickname or a made up name (not just unusual).

Your dislike of American sounding names also makes it surprising you like Kip - if you google for well known people called Kip you will only come up with Americans with that name, and the odd Australian.

People are just trying to open your eyes to the fact that your view of the name as earthy and British is not the image it brings to mind for anyone else!

Pidlan · 02/11/2017 13:50

Kip screams UKIP to me.

annawoolfworries · 02/11/2017 13:56

Kip is a nice name, I know a seven year old kip and it never crossed my mind it was odd. My kids names are regularly criticised on here. In real life people quite like them. Once they're attached to a person they are different. Try not to get upset, I imagine most of the people who don't like milo & lip are not people you'd particularly care about IRL.

Dozer · 02/11/2017 16:05

MNHQ will delete a thread because posters slate a potential baby name and the OP is sad?

Why?

harrietm87 · 02/11/2017 16:40

OP you shouldn't be upset by the thread - surely better to have this reaction now before you've called him Kip than to realise later on that this is what people think? It's all very well having your own thoughts about a name, but ultimately it's your child that will have to go through life with it, so if a lot of people say they don't think it's great, it might be worth listening? Unless you don't care, in which case, why did you ask?

MollyHuaCha · 02/11/2017 17:51

OP, you could call your son a different name and still use Kip as a family nickname.

longestlurkerever · 02/11/2017 19:24

I can see why the OP is upset - people can be very blunt on this topic. Clearly I'm in the minority but I think Kip's OK - certainly not tease-worthy. People seemed to like Rupert and Forrest after all, and Rupert's a bear and Forrest is...a forest.

pret · 02/11/2017 19:29

It’s a shame you’re upset OP but maybe a sign of things to come if this is just randoms on the internet. In RL you’re going to get a lot of comments.

Kip is short for kipper, hence everyone mentioning the biff chips and kipper books.

contortionist · 02/11/2017 19:36

Kip Thorne managed to win the Nobel prize in physics this year, despite the disadvantage of his first name (and being an American).

BernardBlacksHangover · 02/11/2017 19:40

(and being an American).

Shock imagine Wink!

Kip is stupid and he will be called Kipper or Kit.

scrabbler3 · 03/11/2017 00:33

I know a Kip. I think it's great. It suits him. He gets nicknamed Kiplar (a Gavin and Stacey reference).

strugglingtodomybest · 03/11/2017 07:48

I really like Kip, but really dislike Milo. Our dog is called Milo (I didn't name him) and so is the dog across the road. It is a dog's name as far as I'm concerned!

AnaKristina · 03/11/2017 11:18

Think of the baby not you or the family. Go for a sensible name

NinonDeLenclos · 03/11/2017 13:37

I really like Milo I don't think it's overly common.

Kip sounds much more like a poacher than a gentleman. Kit is short for Christopher - it's perfectly English.

pipilangstrumpf · 03/11/2017 13:50

Kip sounds very gentlemanly to me. Kit sounds like a kitty kitten.

I’d avoid Milo due to the chocolate drink connection.
