Torn between semi sensible (normal) and a bit out there

For our boys name we have always been set on Milo, however lately I've noticed a lot of Milos, I don't know if its just me picking up on it more or if its becoming more popular. Theres also a Milo in hollyoaks now.

Another name we like is Kip, its kinda earthy and unusual and perhaps a little bit out there.

Middle names will be rupert or forrest or both.

Either way our parents/families will probably hate both names but I am torn with what to go for. I'm only 30weeks so plenty of time to decide but some input would be useful!

Not kip sorry. He will never get a job or get taken seriously

Kip has a few other meanings depending on where you are in the country incase that worries you?
Go for a Kip (sleep)
Look at the kip (state) of him

I think I prefer milo out of the two.

If you like one syllable names how about
Finn, Cole, Drew, Nate, Blake, Quinn, Jude

(Just a few google suggests!)

But go for what you like best or wait and see what baby looks like out of your favourites.

SparkyBlue · 31/10/2017 14:14

Just to echo what a previous poster said here in Ireland Kip is a commonly used slang word for something messy as in “ that house is an awful Kip”.

milosmummy16 · 31/10/2017 14:18

My son is Milo and absolutely love his name, have never met another one and never been mentioned about tweenies or the milk drink. Altho we did buy a tin of the chocolate milo milk from Tesco as a funny present for.my husband!!!

CrowRoad · 31/10/2017 14:19

Milo gets my vote.

I had a neighbour called Kit - very British, in his 60/70s - I really like the name. I don't like Kip though. To me it sounds like a pets name or like he will get called Kipper all his teenage years. Sorry, that's just my view.

I like Rupert for a first or second name though.

MrsHarker · 31/10/2017 14:50

I like Kip, I think it's cute and to-the-point. I much prefer it to Milo.

Evelynismyspyname · 31/10/2017 15:01

There are tons of other one syllable, not over used names though - I'm curious how Kip made the cut rather than Kurt or Lane or Jay or Thor or Leif or one of hundreds of other possibilities.

Kip sounds very American too, if not a nickname - I'd have a quick Google and see if any famous or literary or film characters have had that name and see what nationality they are, if you don't like names that sound American. I'd bet that most of what comes up is American.

Whinesalot · 31/10/2017 15:05

What about Kit?

DelilahDarcey · 31/10/2017 15:09

Sorry but I think Kip is terrible! Milo is marginally better but still not a great name IMO

MollyHuaCha · 31/10/2017 15:29

Milo is a milkshake mix, hugely popular in Australia.

Kip is short for Kipper and therefore IMO really isn’t great.

Torn between semi sensible (normal) and a bit out there
Evelynismyspyname · 31/10/2017 15:32

Tbh the Milo milkshake is the least convincing reason not to go for a name unless you live in Australia or have strong links there meaning you are likely to go there regularly and he's likely to live there or do a year there living with family or something. Lots of names have far more unfortunate connotations in other languages.

Oly5 · 31/10/2017 15:34

It’s not just popular in Oz.. also South America, Southern Europe and other countries. Up to you

TyrionLannistersShadow · 31/10/2017 15:39

Milo is lovely as is Kit but unfortunately as someone mentioned already , in ireland kip means a horrible , messy place and it's used widely.

stopbeingadramallama · 31/10/2017 16:24

Is this a joke?

FizzyGreenWater · 31/10/2017 16:39

How weird, I was going to ask if you were Amercian and if that was why you like something like Kip!!

Kit is a nickname for Christopher and couldn't be more old fashioned English.

Kip sounds totally American - Like Chip or Buzz, one of those kinds of Happy Days type names. Not the most awful name in the world but not brilliant.

If you love it, go for it though.

holdthewine · 31/10/2017 18:14

I like Kip but I sort of want it to be short for something to give him a choice.... Christopher? Christian?

My 5 DC and their friends are breeding like mad so I know a lot of LO but only 2 Milos so it’s hardly common. If it works with your surname and you like it go with it. Love Rupert too. Again I’d want Gus to be a NN so Angus or Augustus or something.

MikeUniformMike · 31/10/2017 19:53

Kip would be a good name for a dog. Kim or Kit are better. How about Pip?

harrietm87 · 31/10/2017 20:36

Lol that you think Ivo (an actual name) is just a random collection of letters, yet you like Kip (not a real name) that really is just a random collection of letters!

I'd go for Milo - it's a nice name. Kip sounds like a nn or slang, and as a name it sounds really American to me - exactly like a pp said - in the same vein as Chip, Buzz, Huck etc.

bridgetreilly · 31/10/2017 20:54

I know a Kip and I like it as a name. It's fun and it's certainly never stopped him getting a job or being taken seriously. I admit, he's not British and I had always assumed it was a name from his home country. But I still like it.

Wants · 31/10/2017 21:16

My 5 yr old has 2 Milo/Mylo’s in his class. My 11yr old dog is also called Milo😀
Kip sounds like a nickname. How about Christopher shortened to Kit?

BernardBlacksHangover · 31/10/2017 21:18

The op says she hates Kit.

OlennasWimple · 31/10/2017 21:22

Kit isn't American at all Confused

Kip is a NN, a name for a pet or a middle name to counteract a longer first name, not a standalone name in its own right IMHO

Milo is very nice, but it's becoming the new Noah I think (ie shooting up in popularity)

DiegoMadonna · 31/10/2017 21:26

My 5 yr old has 2 Milo/Mylo’s in his class

That's pretty crazy! In 2012, only 1 in every 750 boys was named Milo or Mylo. So to have two in one class is pretty long odds!

gingerbreadmam · 31/10/2017 21:29

I like Rupert Forrest!

steppemum · 31/10/2017 21:30

I actually like Kip.

BUT the kids Oxford Reading Tree books have a main character called Kipper, and I am sure most kids will think he is a short version of that, and wide open for teasing.

I LOVE the name Kit, to me it is a slightly Enid Blytonesque/ AA Milne abbreviation for Christopher
