Torn between semi sensible (normal) and a bit out there

For our boys name we have always been set on Milo, however lately I've noticed a lot of Milos, I don't know if its just me picking up on it more or if its becoming more popular. Theres also a Milo in hollyoaks now.

Another name we like is Kip, its kinda earthy and unusual and perhaps a little bit out there.

Middle names will be rupert or forrest or both.

Either way our parents/families will probably hate both names but I am torn with what to go for. I'm only 30weeks so plenty of time to decide but some input would be useful!

Love Martha.

lazydog · 01/11/2017 15:57

Martha's a lovely name.

Milo is better than Kip, in my opinion, and Kip definitely sounds like an American name to me (as someone who's lived in N.America for the last 12 years.) Kit doesn't, to me, as it's a nickname for Christopher and I've not met any of them since moving here, whereas I knew several when I lived in the UK.

AJPTaylor · 01/11/2017 16:16

if you want an unusual name it really needs to be Gary, Lee or Carl.

DiegoMadonna · 01/11/2017 16:23

Well tbf, Kip is less common than all of those, even now.

FizzyGreenWater · 01/11/2017 16:24

Call him Stuart

Fekko · 01/11/2017 16:26

Kip is a nap or a midden/mess (as in 'your bedroom is a kip - get it tidied before dinner').

WildRosesGrow · 01/11/2017 16:29

How about Kipling, with Kip for short? Seems to go with the Rupert / Forrest vibe.

Is this your first child? I think lots of us have spent so much time reading the Oxford Reading Tree books, that we have the strange genderless names from there on our No list (Biff, Chip and Kipper). If you had a longer name, with Kip for short, then it might avoid this being brought up at school.

Cavender · 01/11/2017 16:29

I live in the USA. I think it’s hysterical that you think Kit is American sounding but have no issue with Kip.

Fekko · 01/11/2017 16:40

Kit was an American kid in (I think) the famous 5.

PhatSlag · 01/11/2017 16:48

harriet The dog is called Floppy.

OP, what about Keir?

Evelynismyspyname · 01/11/2017 17:01

Dale or Oak are earthy one syllable names...

Almost anything is better than Kip

Coey2016 · 01/11/2017 18:17

I like Milo and don't know any little ones.

Goosegrass · 01/11/2017 19:59

Short for UKIP?

ZenNudist · 01/11/2017 20:07

To me kip is a nap. As in "off for a kip"

It is not a name.

mondler · 01/11/2017 20:18

I like both names. I've never met a Kip in real life but there's one mentioned on Friends. At least Kip is a name that's easy to pronounce and spell, just not sure if it works well with either middle name? Kip Milo though sounds nice to me :)

Also, LOVE Martha.

Fekko · 01/11/2017 20:21

Kipper in those wretched books?

nooka · 01/11/2017 20:44

The OP and her partner should give their child a name they love but I'm really not understanding her rationale. I had a work colleague who called their child Kip (or maybe Kipp) and everyone was a bit Hmm. It's not really much of a name is it? Seems a bit random, like calling your child 'nap' or 'zizz'.

English country gentleman usually have solid traditional names. I'd assume 'earthy' means either with a connection to nature, or maybe she was thinking more 'salt of the earth' which again would make me think traditional, not 'out there'.

pipilangstrumpf · 01/11/2017 22:43

Why would Kip be any less of a ‘name’ than Kit, Zak or Ed?

Evelynismyspyname · 02/11/2017 08:53

Pipi Kit is a long established diminutive for Christopher, Ed for Edward, Zach for Zachary or Zachariah - none are really full names, they are all diminutive forms which are sometimes registered as official names. What's Kip short for? As someone else says the first association for most people is a common slang word for sleeping or mess, not a name or nickname.

bunerison · 02/11/2017 09:06

Biff, Chip and Kipper. The reading scheme designed to drive all parents of 5 year olds to utter insanity. Don't do it.

Hazandduck · 02/11/2017 09:50

I love Kip! Go for it. I totally second what @Teenagezombie said.

Leilaniii · 02/11/2017 09:52

How about Pip?

Dozer · 02/11/2017 09:53

Kip is horrendous and brings to mind Kipper from those awful reading books many schools still use!

Forrest is ridiculous too. Forrest Gump.

itsasecret1 · 02/11/2017 12:18

I think you either like unusual names or you don't

I'm not sure why everyone is going on about the biff / chip / kipper books. Kip is a different name to kipper, like Mike is Michael.

I do think you can express an opinion about a name without being insulting or rude though.

OP posts:
Evelynismyspyname · 02/11/2017 12:28

Mike isn't a different name to Michael, it's the most common diminutive/ shortening used for the name Michael. 99% of Mikes are actually called Michael Confused
