Have you ever had someone laugh/snigger at your baby's name to your face/whilst you've been in close proximity? How did you deal with it? How did it make you feel? Happened to me for the first time today x

Oddly, it hasn't happened to DS1 who has a traditional, but very unusual name (fewer than 10 each year), but it has happened with DS2 who has a name which hovers around the top 100 (and is also a traditional name). It was a schoolgirl who sniggered, but still.

Ooh really want to hear ur name ! I wdnt worry about tht mean cow! My kids have interesting names and fairly wild nicknames , I get a few eye widens !
If u love the name, bollocks to anyone else ;)

Lunathemoon · 30/10/2017 20:32

I think I may have mentioned her name on another thread, I don't think it's so unusual that it will be outing🙈 It's Effie.

BernardBlacksHangover · 30/10/2017 20:35

Effie's lovely! Silly woman.

SpookghosttiAndMeatboos · 30/10/2017 20:38

When I told my sister what we'd named my son she was horrified and asked me if I loved him!

Ttbb · 30/10/2017 20:39

Nope. People will ask for clarification/mispronounce occasionally but never had anyone laugh. Names are not funny in any way though, just v unusual.

Lunathemoon · 30/10/2017 20:42

Oh wow Spookghost when I first told my sister she said 'well I will be calling her * (another diminutive of her BC name' I politely read passive aggressively told her that she wouldn't be calling her that and she would be corrected each and every time she tried. Safe to say she has only ever called her Effie😂

I've never had someone laugh but my ex's uncle did suggest my some was a 'poor little bleeder' to have been saddled with the name and asked me what he'd done wrong to warrant it ....... but since the uncle had chosen to name his own son Wayne I wasn't particularly bothered about his opinion Halloween Smile

BakerBear · 30/10/2017 20:45

I ve had a few people ask if i named dd after where she was concieved.

I ve had many sniggers about her name in the past although as she is getting older (5years old) the sniggers are getting less frequent.

She went to a party last week with a twat of a childrens entertainer and i knew straightaway he would take the piss out of her name and i was right! Luckily she didnt know what the hell he was on about and nobody laughed

SpikeGilesSandwich · 30/10/2017 20:46

Effie is really sweet, OP and not silly at all, just ignore the cow.
I've read varying opinions of my DS's name on here and I'm pretty sure some people don't like it irl but that's their problem.
If we all liked the same things, the world would be very boring.

MadameJosephine · 30/10/2017 20:47

What is her Birth certificate name OP? Excuse my ignorance, Effie is really pretty but I don’t know what it’s short for

Rinceoir · 30/10/2017 20:47

My DD has an Irish name. She has a common Irish name which is not common here in England. People generally persistently try to pronounce it how they think it should be pronounced based on an English phonetic interpretation of the spelling.

I have a similar issue with my own name here!

BernardBlacksHangover · 30/10/2017 20:51

MadameJosephine

Funnily enough I think it can be short for Josephine! I had it on my list for dc2, but think we're having a boy.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/10/2017 20:53

I met a baby with a name I may have raised an eyebrow about. Then a few weeks later the mother went out of her way to make friends with me, invite me to everything and pretty much handed me a friendship group I’ve kept for 8 years, held my hand through my divorce and was 100% there for me. I will never judge a baby name ever again

BernardBlacksHangover

Of course, I was stuck on trying to think of names beginning with E!

Lovely name OP, ignore the stupid sniggering woman!

Santawontbelong · 30/10/2017 21:25

I would love to share with you the only name that I have heard a dc called that has made me bite the inside of my mouth really hard it nearly bled.......
My ds was in hospital with croup over 20 years ago now.
The little girl in the next room - all had big paned windows for the nurses to check on them - I smiled at the dm as I looked at her as she was a stunning girl about 18 months, all frills and ribbons, not pj's like most.
The dm came outside as we weren't allowed in other rooms obviously.
I commented on how lovely her dd was.

Yes Gloria- Victoria was indeed a beauty. Grin

thegreylady · 31/10/2017 06:41

I know a gorgeous 8 year old Effie and that is her complete name not a shortened form. I can’t think of a ‘long’ name with Effie for short...Euphemia??

Mrsknackered · 31/10/2017 09:48

I like Effie! What's on her BC?

DS2 has a name just in the top 100, and I've had a friend say she hates it, my mum say it's common and MIL say it's not a child's name.

Stuff all of them, everyone likes it now he's nearly 1, and 700 other sets of parents in the U.K. liked it the year he was born too!

Steeley113 · 31/10/2017 10:12

I love the name Effie!

I laughed out loud when I heard 'Princess' shouted across soft play once, luckily the girl was with a child minder not her mother who also laughed. I'd of felt awful otherwise, I didn't mean to laugh out loud!

I've inwardly sniggered at a friend who has an 'aprillia' too but never to her face!

BernardBlacksHangover · 31/10/2017 10:15

My friend works with children and had to keep a very straight face when one of the children she worked with said they had a new brother named Daddy-Cool! I wonder now though if the child was having her on... Apparently the older child had a pretty common(ly used) name.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 31/10/2017 10:38

Effie isn’t strange? I thought you were going to say she was called Honey Badger or something (thinks of that bonkers animal name thread from a few weeks ago).

SleepingStandingUp · 31/10/2017 12:47

Effie is lovely but even if her name wad Starfish Amaretto from thebsex position and drink of choice in her conception, surely you just smile politely and make a platitude about it being original / distinctive etc.
Ignore her

dottypotter · 31/10/2017 14:14

whats the name?

Mamabear4180 · 31/10/2017 14:19

Effie is very cute OP

I did once lol at the name Toffee but not to the mum's face Blush it didn't help that it was my daughter's hamster's name.

CatkinToadflax · 31/10/2017 19:57

Chuckling about the comments regarding Henry as a name! Smile My DS is a Henry and it really suits him (and he loves his name), but when I was a teenager my brother had a friend called Henry and I remember thinking it was the most preposterous, old-man-ish name ever!

Effie is lovely, very cute.
