Is Jacob always shortened to Jake? I love the name Jacob but not a huge fan of Jake!

I know it's not quite the same sound, but you could shorten it to Coby ...

TenThousandSpoons · 28/10/2017 22:25

I know three Jacobs who are usually Jacob - one sometimes Jakes.

NewToAllThisStufff · 28/10/2017 22:25

I like Coby! Do you think it would always be shortened then? I prefer just Jacob

Usually, yes!

Jonas?

SuperBeagle · 28/10/2017 22:25

No. I know a few Jacobs who are just Jacob. Similarly, I know several Jakes who are not Jacobs.

steppemum · 28/10/2017 22:26

The Jacobs i know are always Jacob

WildRosesGrow · 28/10/2017 22:28

My children have both had friends called Jacob, they were never Jake.

Joshua was also never Josh, partly because there was also a Josh too. I used to get Josh and Joshua mixed up, which my son couldn't understand, as to him they were totally different names.

greendale17 · 28/10/2017 22:29

No/ I don’t know any that are shortened to Jake

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 28/10/2017 22:30

I know three. Aged 30 to 1. They are all just Jacob

littlemissneela · 28/10/2017 22:31

My ds is a Jacob. He doesn't like being called Jake but as his mum I get to call him Jakey and get away with it Grin He is 19.

Mrsknackered · 28/10/2017 22:32

I know two, neither are Jake.

The only Jake I know is, Jake

Stargirl82 · 28/10/2017 22:32

Ds1 is a Jacob. Never shortened!

Pemba · 28/10/2017 22:45

But Jake is lovely! - I actually prefer it to Jacob itself but would put Jacob on the birth certificate. If you call him Jacob all the time, probably family at least will do the same, and not shorten it. However when he goes to school, you kind of lose control over it a bit - does it matter?

Actually knew one that was a Kuba (pronounce koo-ba, not like the island of Cuba) but he was from a Polish family so it was probably actually Jakub.

Sophronia · 29/10/2017 00:11

I know one shortened to Jake and one who is just Jacob.

PandaCat · 29/10/2017 07:49

There are two in my DDs class, neither are Jake, just Jacob

MiriAmmerman · 29/10/2017 09:46

I know 2 Jacobs - their names are never shortened.
I also know 2 Jakes, who are just Jake on their BC.
People will follow your lead OP - and FWIW I think Jacob is a lovely name Smile

mum2be2boys · 29/10/2017 12:55

I know one Jacob and he's never shortened to Jake

NewToAllThisStufff · 29/10/2017 13:15

It’s up to you and then the child if they want their name shortened. If you like Jacob tell people that’s their name and correct them if they shorten it. If you don’t think you could do that then choose a different name.
