Baby names

Why am I so scared of the name?!

Maybe scared isn't the right word. So our baby boy is due in a week (first baby). We have a Scandi name (husband is Swedish) and I like it! It's strong and unusual. And it's the only one I got interested/excited about when searching through the same 10 baby boys names. But I care SO much about what others think, that I get nervous at the idea of announcing the name. Is this ridiculous? Or normal? Is it a warning I should take note of? I wish I could be less of a conformist Confused Look, it's not saddling baby with a freaky name, it'll be fine be on his CV and our families love the name. I just have a morbid fear of other people scoffing/being derisive about the name. Then again, my friend told me people had an opinion (sometimes negative) even on the most common/sensible of names with her boy! I've even considered asking UK adults with this name (Facebook) how they felt/feel about it. Which I know is mental. Aaaaaargh!

Magnus is lovely!! Everyone may not know one but everyone has heard of one! I too went with a more European name and everyone loves it now! X

It's a good name OP.

I had a different name as my number 1. And Sebastian as my number 2 name so DP would prefer my number 1 name which was Tobias (Toby). He hated Toby. And chose Sebastian.

I was terrified from 20 weeks when we gave 'bump' his name as I thought that the name was too mc (we are very wc) and too out there for our northern, ex mining town roots.

It suits him perfectly and everyone who has ever met him agrees and comments positively on his name.

Dc2 was very nearly Magnus! It's such a fab name but we have absolutely no Scandi links so thought that maybe made it a built pretentious. I spent so many hours worrying about dc2 name that when it came to it I panicked and just called him Fred Grin. Which actually suits him perfectly.

Magnus is a great name. I know a Scottish lad in his teens with that name and I've always thought it was rather cool and classic.

I love Magnus and it would have been a strong contender had DC 3 not been a DD.

We don't have a Scandinavian surname or any particular heritage from that region so I think it your situation it will be perfect.

What a great name! A lovely Scandinavian name that'll be unique but not unfamiliar here. No need to be worried about it.

Hope your baby Magnus arrives safely!

Great name. I don't even think it particularly screams 'Scandi', if that's what you're worried about - its origins are obvious, but so is the pronunciation and it's not unfamiliar as a name.

When you said it was scandi I hoped it would be Magnus. I love the name, it's wonderful. Really!

Well, I may be biased, but I think it's a fab name Wink
Lots of boys/men in the UK named Magnus- particularly in Scotland.
It has become a little hipster-ish recently, but mine was born before then.
He's known as Magnus/Mags/Maggi/Magster by us. Occasionally children think he's called Magnet!

We have a Magnus too. Our surname is Danish. Everyone seems to love it. Apart from the person leading storytime at the library once who looked really shocked. Turns out she thought we’d called him ‘Madness’.

I love it too! Scandi-ish but not totally ridiculous or unheard of here. Don’t know any myself. Go for it. Love anything Scandi (Danish relatives).

I love it. It sounds a really intelligent name!

I did think it was going to be Thor- we have a friend called this. We love that name too.

Love the name Magnus. I've never known one but for me it brings to mind a tall, clever, sexy man.

I knew it was Magnus! Of all the Scandi names (which are lovely) this is sort of a more common one, no? Have no fear. It's a totally normal name outside of Scandinavia. I've met a few British kids with the name.

I have a relative who recently used this name, as soon as it was announced I loved the name as did my partner! Really suits the little one too! Don't be nervous! All the best!

Report
ImSoUnoriginal · 25/10/2017 22:03

I like it. It's different without being too unusual. Saying that, don't worry too much what other people think. It's you and your partner who matter in this.
My mother isn't keen on the shortening of my sons name. That's ok, she can just use his full name (though I think she's used to it now).

Great name - strong, masculine, easy to pronounce, easy to spell. What’s not to like?
