Just that really, seems a bit of a mixed bag online between emme-line and emme-leen.

Roganjosh it's pronounced emmaleen in Ireland, why on earth would it be pronounced to rhyme in Caroline in ireland? What a peculiar thing to say

EBearhug · 25/10/2017 16:42

-leen

soupforbrains · 25/10/2017 16:46

I've heard it pronounced mostly as Emma-leen, and that's how I would pronounce it myself but I've also heard it pronounced Emma-lin (rhymes with win).

I've never heard anyone say Emmeline rhymes with Caroline/wine ever before.

EBearhug · 25/10/2017 16:46

AA Milne's poem Before Tea rhymes every single line with Emmeline,: seen, between, green, mean, clean, green, been, queen.

So he's very definite about it being -leen.

KittyVonCatsington · 25/10/2017 16:47

Exactly Pemba. Posters are just writing it out phonetically with an 'uh' or 'a', correctly.

DramaAlpaca · 25/10/2017 17:25

I pronounce the ending -leen.

I've never heard of it being pronounced any other way.

itssomucheasier · 25/10/2017 17:53

Em-eh-leen

MollyHuaCha · 25/10/2017 18:06

I’d like to update my answer.

I wrote Emma-leen, but actually, I don’t say the first two syllables in the same way I say Emma. The second syllable is a definite ‘e’ sound - the same ‘e’ as in egg.

So I’m going to update Emma-leen to Emm-eh-leen. Spelt Emmeline of course.

Itsonkyme · 25/10/2017 18:11

Definitely LEEN as in CLEAN

Never heard of LINE as in WINE. (This pronunciation spoils a very pretty name imo).

Grumpyoldwoman007 · 25/10/2017 18:11

I only know one and she is emma-line and gets very annoyed when people pronounce it "leen"

GoldenWorld · 25/10/2017 19:51

Emma-leen

pipilangstrumpf · 25/10/2017 22:40

Emm-eh-leen

FreeFrie · 25/10/2017 23:36

Emmaline makes sense looking at similar structured names like Caroline and such, but I think Emmaleen sounds nicer.

xhannahx · 26/10/2017 10:22

Thanks everyone!
As it turns out we found out we are having a boy yesterday which was a bit of a shock as we we're both convinced we were having another girl.
Back to the drawing board for us!

Congratulations!

I'm curious though, how did you want to pronounce Emmeline? Grin

xhannahx · 26/10/2017 10:36

Being totally honest I initially thought it was emme-line, but would have opted for emme-leen following everyone's comments.

Gosh sorry @lorelairoryemily , I got it wrong. Just had a Maryline as a friend who was Irish and Mary line not leen, so if I’d met an Irish emmeline I would have been more likely to apply the same rule.
No need for the ‘why on earth’ and ‘what a peculiar thing to say’.

lorelairoryemily · 26/10/2017 17:50

Roganjosh, I do think it was a peculiar thing to suggest that an Irish person would say it that way. That wasn't an attack it is my opinion and I'm allowed it😊

pickleface · 26/10/2017 17:54

Emma_leen

ricecakeseverywhere · 26/10/2017 17:55

I see you now have a boy so academic but the one I know is Emma-line

cabbage67 · 26/10/2017 17:56

Emma-leen

Morello444 · 27/10/2017 20:04

Emme-leen. i really don't like the emme-line pronunciation. Always thought it was that way,

Always pronounced it as Emme-leen Pankhurst is that wrong?

MBDBBB · 27/10/2017 20:14

I’m going to be controversial and say emme-lin (to rhyme with tin). Or leen at a push but defo not line.

JaneEyre70 · 27/10/2017 20:29

Em-ah-leen. Lovely name.

Hastalamorte · 27/10/2017 20:30

Emma lean. Lovely name.
