Is Clara becoming a popular name?

I don't know of any in real life and it's been on my names list for a very long time but suddenly I'm seeing it everywhere.
Has it recently had a huge growth in popularity?
We wanted something short (long surname), classic, and beautiful, with a hint of unusual (ie not Emily etc- no offence to any Emilys).

I'd prefer if there weren't 3 in the same class when she's in school as I have a unique name and I've always loved it.

I know 3- One's about 9, one is 2ish and one is a baby. They live within the same 5 avenues in South Manchester.

It seems quite a popular name on Mumsnet but I don't actually know any Claras in real life (of any age, and I know quite a few little ones). Great name.

Clara was Heidi's friend in the book! I know a few but there are a lit of German/half German families where we live.

Longdistance · 23/10/2017 00:29

I know a Clara, she’s 42, and brilliant Grin

Dusktilldawn · 23/10/2017 07:36

I've only seen it on mumsnet. Not keen myself.

Ledehe · 23/10/2017 07:41

I have a Clara. She's just turned 2. Only met one other, at a baby group. She was a couple of months older than mine.

Everyone always complements her name when they hear it.

I'm in Glasgow.

Can't believe someone said there is more Claras than Emilys where they are. About 1 in 5 girls here are called Emily or Jessica

I know one adult Clara (40s). None at my DC’s school (there was a Cara who left and I think there is a Cora). Round here the most popular name seems to be Isabelle. There are at least 2 in each of my children’s year groups. A beautiful name but I am relieved I didn’t choose it as they are all known as Isabelle [surname] and we have quite an ugly surname Grin

BernardBlacksHangover · 23/10/2017 08:08

I know one adult and one child named Clara. The adult is in her mid-thirties. The child is the only one in my dd's (small) nursery.

There are two Olivias, but that's the only name where there is more than one in the nursery.

I do think Clara is becoming more popular, but also agree with pp who said you rarely have three of the same name in a class these days.

I’ve got a cat Clara 😀

Cockmagic · 23/10/2017 08:45

I don't like it personally , ok for a cat though!

"The only companion that didn’t make the top 100 is poor Donna!"

That's because so many are in their 50s. It's the wrong point in the naming cycle, IYSWIM.

Tardis

And yes, there was a marked increase in the number of threads asking for opinions on the name Clara during that character's time in the Tardis, and I assume at least some of those might have resulted in RL choices (not least as it's a nice name which usually attracts positive comments)

TheLegendOfBeans · 23/10/2017 09:12

I know three under six.

All SW London

TheAntiBoop · 23/10/2017 09:20

I suggested it to dh but he dismissed it because 'it's a popular name for a cow' where he's from apparently

Does that count as one of the maddest reasons for not choosing a name!!

RaindropsAndSparkles · 23/10/2017 12:40

No. My DH said the same about Daisy

TheAntiBoop · 23/10/2017 13:13

Ha ha! I wonder what common names there are for cows around the world!

WildCherryBlossom · 23/10/2017 13:28

Ermintrude?

Sittingonthefence83 · 23/10/2017 16:33

I love Clara, wanted to call my DD1 it but my DH said no because it was Hitler's mums name!? Hmm
