So, we've made a short list of names for our daughter due at the end of the year. Top of the list is the name Ariya (pronounced A-ree-ah) however I prefer the spelling of Aria (pronounced Arr-ree-ah) - might be easier to youtube these! Concerned if we go with the pronunciation of Ariya but spelling of Aria, we will constantly correcting people. Thoughts?

I do agree with you, I'd go for Aria as well and I don't think it will create confusion on spelling that much.

Chaffinch4 · 20/10/2017 10:41

I agree Aria is a nicer spelling. I would probably pronounce it Arr-ree-ya (like a song in an opera), but would only need correcting once if it was slightly different.

If you choose the spelling of one name with the pronounciation of another, then yes, you will constantly be correcting people...telling them they are wrong when they are saying it right! And you may only have to do it for a few years, the poor child will have be doing it their entire lives.
Pronounce the name how it is meant to be pronounced,

Aria is def more mainstream and people will pronounce it correctly.

I'm not. A fan of Ariya but as said just tell people how its pronounced and correct as needed

nodogsinthebedroom · 20/10/2017 10:59

Aria with that pron is fine imo

calamityjam · 20/10/2017 11:12

I prefer Arya, pronounced Ar-ya. But I'm a massive GOT fan

SleepingStandingUp · 20/10/2017 11:19

And no one is a fan of arrears

TonicAndTonic · 20/10/2017 11:23

Tricky one! In my opinion:

Ariya - looks like a made up spelling but you will most likely get people using the pronunciation you like.

Aria - far more traditional/mainstream spelling but yes you will get a proportion of people saying it AH-ree-a (because that's how you pronounce the musical term Aria in e.g. an opera).

beela · 20/10/2017 11:26

You can't have the spelling of one and the pronunciation of another! That would be like calling your child Jane but pronouncing it Jean.

nodogsinthebedroom · 20/10/2017 11:33

Just realised I read your OP wrong!

I would pronounce Aria Are-ee-a

stellarfox · 20/10/2017 22:18

Aria is my preference but I would keep its actual pronunciation or it will be too confusing!

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 20/10/2017 22:23

PLL fan here- I prefer Aria.

daisypond · 21/10/2017 10:52

Aria is AH-ree-uh - like the dictionary spells it for the music. If I saw Ariya, I'd think it would be pronounced ar-EYE-uh.

wooster16 · 22/10/2017 22:28

Prefer Arya (another GOT fan..)
