Can I use Joseph?

So, DH loves the name Joseph as it is the name of one of his favourite people who is sadly no longer with us.

I really like it too, but I'm a bit worried it sounds too similar to my own name. He thinks I'm mad! My name is Joan, which sounds similar to the inevitable shortening of Joe. At home and with my family I'm Joanie, so admittedly that is different.

What do you all think? I should maybe also add I'm American, so I do struggle with British naming etiquette, and I don't want to do something awful to my unborn child!

Sounds ok to me. I like the name Joseph (and Joe)!

Go for it!

They are similar sounds, but I don't think it matters hugely. You may get the occasional person who thinks about it/mentions it, but I don't think it will matter in the grand scheme of things.

Maybe just avoid him becoming Joey. Joanie and Joey could be confusing!

Yes, as you both like it. I think it's nice it's similar to your name.

Yes, it would be fine to use it. Lovely name Smile

Could you use seph as a nn for him instead?

MikeUniformMike · 01/10/2017 20:08

I like Joan and Joanie. Joseph and Joe are both excellent names. Not too similar.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/10/2017 20:18

Yes you can use Joseph. Joe/Joss

Sounds fine to me. Just avoid Jonah

Seph is awful and not a natural nn for Joseph

ZydecoLaydee · 02/10/2017 12:19

Thanks all! Joseph it is!

My DS (7) is Joseph and his late Great Grandmother is Joan. It's the 1st time I've wondered if they are similar and nobody from my large extended family have mentioned it either. I'd go for it if you like the name
