What are your thoughts? What do you imagine an Idris to be like?

Do you associate it more as a Welsh name or a Muslim name? Do you know any?

I love it. Know of one toddler with that name (Wales).

It's a nice name. I think of it more as a Muslim name than Welsh. Makes me think of Idris Alba.

I think of it as more muslim. Maybe cos I know lots of muslims (including some called Idris) and almost no Welsh people.

When I've mentioned it people say it's a Muslim name so wouldn't suit (child likely to be light hair, blue eyes)

Lovely name. I've always associated it with Welsh origins, so is interesting to hear about the Islamic prophet connection as well.

Gets my vote because of the talented gorgeousness that is Mr Elba.

It's a welsh name to me, but then I'm Welsh! Big association with Idris Elba too.

Mostly Welsh here, I know a couple of little ones. Lovely name. There's also Emrys if you like that sort of sound.

We got a few double takes when he was born but now it's just his name. Not unusual for me because my dad and his family are Welsh but my DH isn't and we don't live in wales.

But the one of Elba fame is short for Idrissa which is Sierra Leonean/west african I think

I've only ever known Welsh Idrises (including Idris the Dragon from Ivor the Engine!).

Actually, until reading it on MN I had no idea it was anything other than Welsh- really interesting!

Cool name, wasn't sure where it was from but wouldn't be surprised with any ethnicity.
