Why call her "Eva" but pronounce it differently?

Hope this isn't too outing.
Basically there's a little girl that goes to the same nursery as my kids.
So on her peg, her coat, her bag, on the class list for party invites etc her name is written "Eva". However when you speak to her mum and say "oh did Eva get the party invite" etc, then her mum will reply "it's Ava. Just spelt with an E"
All the nursery staff call her Ava too.
This mum appears very normal and intelligent, so can anyone explain why you'd name your daughter Eva, but make everyone pronounce it Ava? Do you think she named her Eva and then preferred Ava?
Or is Ava a known pronunciation for the name Eva?
Most weeks I hear her mum correcting parents and other members of staff within the nursery.
I'm too polite to ask her myself!

NC as very outing.
I have an Eva (ee-va), and am honestly baffled by the responses as in her whole 11 years she's never even once been called Ava (or in fact, anything other than ee-va) by anyone.
I was aware of the pronunciation of Eva Peron and Eva Braun - of course - but I assumed this was merely a foreign pronunciation. She was named for her great grandmother, also an ee-va.
She's at a pretty international prep school, heaps of European kids, and the teachers all assumed Eva (ee-va) when they first met her, having only seen it written.
Reading all the replies suggests the majority of people would pronounce her name ay-va and this has honestly boggled my mind!
Is it a regional thing maybe?
I hope no-one starts calling her Ava - our surname is Brown!!

I would automatically pronounce Eva as Ava. It's a perfectly reasonable pronunciation!

Er no it isn’t. I would pronounce it E-va

Zombie thread...

Indeed in the Netherlands also - Eva is pronounced “Ay-fah” and Ava is more like the ‘a’ from ‘car’ sound

I much prefer Eva pronounced Ava, like Eva Peron. I think it’s mugh classier and I dislike Ava as a name written down.

I am baffled as to why anyone would name their child Eva Brown! Shock

Er no it isn’t. I would pronounce it E-va

But the E can be pronounced as Eh so Ehva, just like Ellen or Ever!
