Favourite spelling of the name Beau

mummarichardson · 21/09/2017 14:28

Just found out we are having a girl, our favourite name is Beau but I am stuck on the spelling as since Beau has become more popular as I know a few boys called Beau and that spelling feels more like a boys name to me.

I really like Bo but husband hates the fact that when she spells it, she will have to say B O as in 'I have bad BO'. Do get his point to be fair.

Then there is Bow but to me that just looks like an object rather than a name.

Which do you think is best?

So will you go with Bo? It's a good name in that spelling.

So that's an American ap though - look at how they spell Center!

They have weird and wonderful versions of names.

BertrandRussell · 21/09/2017 16:02

Beau is only a name because it's a shortening of Beauregard- a surname. It's difficult to find a polite way to point out that you would only call a girl Beau if you didn't know that it is the masculine word for good looking in French. So people will make assumptions about you -and by extension her- if you use it. Sorry.

And Beaux is even worse. Not only masculine, but plural.............

I'm going to throw Poubelle into the mix - such a CUTE name and in now way trashy.

SerfTerf · 21/09/2017 16:18

Pronounced how poppy? Not POO-BELL surely?

ILikeyourHairyHands · 21/09/2017 16:23

Best spelling of the name Beau for a girl?

Claire.

Plexie · 21/09/2017 16:30

Yes Poppy, Poubelle is such a pretty name. I'm surprised it's not more popular as a girl's name. Grin

BertrandRussell · 21/09/2017 16:30

How about Belle as a spelling?

NewToAllThisStufff · 21/09/2017 16:33

I like Beau!! I consider it a unisex name too!

nooka · 21/09/2017 16:36

I think it would be pretty weird to give your daughter a word for a name that means handsome male in a language that she will along with all her classmates will learn at school. It's really not an obscure meaning a lot of people will think it an odd name.

Bo is risky unless you Scandinavian, and is also masculine, but it's a lot more unusual and most people will probably think of Bo Derek or possibly Bo Peep which are feminine associations.

Bow and Bough are both weird and as likely to be pronounced B-ow as B-o. Boe just looks a bit random to me, although if you put it into many internet babyname sites they will tell you it's a real name. This is however also true if you put random letters in, showing how totally useless most of those sites are.

ladystarkers · 21/09/2017 16:42

Beau is aboy's name but lots of people use it as a girls name. 🤷🏼‍♀️

SerfTerf · 21/09/2017 16:43

Ah poubelle Grin

If I download enough apps, I'll soon be a polyglot Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 21/09/2017 16:44

most people will probably think of Bo Derek or possibly Bo Peep

I'm afraid I thought of Bo Diddley.

Bo is cute enough as a nickname, but (IMO) to cutesy to use as a whole name.

Aquamarine1029 · 21/09/2017 16:53

I love the name Beau for a girl or boy, always have. The spelling Beaux is lovely.

AuntyEstablishment · 21/09/2017 16:57

I used to rent my skis from a place called Poubelle Du Ski

True fact Wink

I like Bell rather than Belle

Not keen on Beau for a girl but it's not unusual to give girls boys names. 🤷🏻‍♀️

mummarichardson · 21/09/2017 17:01

Ok think I have established that most people see the spelling Beau as a male name. I couldn't deal with having people give such strong comments on it in real life so that is definitely out.

Again thank you to those who have answered specifically to the question.

Poubelle sounds pretty, shame it means rubbish bin.

GinIsIn · 21/09/2017 17:03

Have you considered Balonz?

loveinanelevator · 21/09/2017 17:04

That’s a shame @mummarichardson if it’s a name you loved

mummarichardson · 21/09/2017 17:06

@loveinanelevator I may still use Bo yet. I know it's used for females a lot more commonly and I really love that regardless of what people think.

How about Pubert? Puberta is the feminine version.

Beau is a lovely name, just a pity it is a boy's name.

How about Boudicca and nn Bo?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 21/09/2017 17:13

I'm having a deja vu moment here.

Lemondrop99 · 21/09/2017 17:14

I'm really not keen on the Bo spelling. It does make me think B-O. Sorry.

While technically incorrect, I think the Beau spelling is kinder and has Lessing bullying potential than Bo
