How would you pronounce "Evelyn"

Is it "EEV-LYN" or "EVER-LYN"? I think the latter sounds like the American pronunciation but I'd like people's opinions on how they would pronounce?

TIA.

EVER-LYN

CotswoldStrife · 17/09/2017 22:10

All the ones I know of DD's age pronounce it Eve-lyn

TealStar · 17/09/2017 22:13

Ever-lyn for a girl (but obviously not with the r sound!)

Eve-lyn for a boy.

venys · 17/09/2017 22:14

Ever lyn

greendale17 · 17/09/2017 22:15

Evee-lyn

Pemba · 17/09/2017 22:15

Eev-lin as this was my grandmother's name. But obviously I know there are lots of Ev-lins and Evver-lins too, and I think maybe that's more popular at the moment.

I think Eev-lin is prettier though, as it is closer to 'Eve' , which can then be used more logically as a nickname.

verystressedmum · 17/09/2017 22:16

Eve-Lyn

Gaggleofgirls · 17/09/2017 22:31

By us it's always Eev-lin, I've never heard it the other way, or for a boy.
It's very popular actually. We really liked Ever-lin but would have spelt it Evalyn as otherwise it would definitely have been mispronounced.

Lemondrop99 · 17/09/2017 23:55

Ev-eh-lyn

Never Eve-lyn

nooka · 17/09/2017 23:59

I know an Ev-lyn and an Eve-lyn, so one of those. Not Ever-lyn. But I'd probably ask first :)

Dixiechickonhols · 18/09/2017 00:07

My Grandma was Ev Lyn and used to have to correct people. Many pronounced it Eve Lynn.

MammieBear · 18/09/2017 12:11

Ever-lyn don't care for the over pronunciation.

grufallosfriend · 18/09/2017 12:21

I'd pronounce it as Ev-eh-lyn, 3 syllables.

kaytee87 · 18/09/2017 12:21

Ev-e-lynn

IWouldLikeToKnow · 18/09/2017 12:28

I'm in Ireland and it's either Ev-Lyn or Ev-Eh-Lyn. There is no R in there

HoratioNightboy · 18/09/2017 12:38

Another vote for:

EV-lin for girls (I've never known or heard one pronounced any other way)

EVE- lin for boys (based on Evelyn Waugh, the only one I've heard of)

Also in Scotland, if that makes a difference.

MissWilmottsGhost · 18/09/2017 12:43

I know an eeeve-Lynn. I always get confused by ever-Lynn.

this thread isn't going to deteriorate into an argument between rhotic and non-rhotic pronunciation again is it

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 14:26

Another Scot here. I knew a couple (girls) growing up and they were both Ev-lyn.

But I've heard Eve-lyn for Evelyn Waugh, so perhaps that's the male way.

squoosh · 19/09/2017 15:16

What I've been wondering is..................how does everyone pronounce Frances?

NearLifeExperience · 19/09/2017 16:01

Anything but the dreaded Frances!

(France's - like belonging to France!)Grin

BasicBetty · 19/09/2017 16:05

Eve-lyn

gummibaers · 19/09/2017 16:49

But Eve-lyn could be pronounced

E-veh-lyn or Eev-lyn

bridgetreilly · 19/09/2017 18:28

Two syllables: eve-lynn. I've only heard the three-syllable pronunciation in America.
