Amos or Casper?

Just wondered what people thought of the name Amos. My two other sons have religious names (although we are not religious) so I thought maybe I should choose another religious name.

Other ideas are
Casper
Elliot
Elias
Rowan

Opinions or other suggestions welcome!

I prefer Caspar but I love Rowan (I like the spelling Rohan).

Jasper
Ezra
Ellis
Angus
Adam
Bram
Jonas
Reuben

Amos feels a bit fuddy duddy to me.

All others on your list are lovely names. Casper is my favourite. Elliot is quite popular now. I know a newborn called Elias but never met one before.

LottaBean · 11/09/2017 20:01

Elliott and Elias are my faves although im a sucker for a E name! Grin

Many years ago when I was about 13 I watched an episode of an American tv drama with my DM - she was hooked on it, something like Law & Order. There was an older male character that I thought everyone kept referring to as anus. I said to my DM, wow, that's harsh, why is he known as anus? She looked at me blankly and replied that it was because it was his name. It took me a looooonggggg time to work out that the name was Amos. So whilst I happily admit I may be the only person ever to have made that mistake I thought I'd put it out there just in case!

MikeUniformMike · 11/09/2017 20:12

How about Abel?
I would go for the Caspar spelling

RB37 · 11/09/2017 20:14

Our little man is Caleb. Religious but not obviously so. We're not particularly religious but we do like a lot of the Hebrew/biblical names

ZippyCameBack · 11/09/2017 20:14

Amos reminds me of Emmerdale, when Amos was the very whiskery landlord of the Woolpack. I'm very old.

Namechangeblock · 11/09/2017 20:15

I LOVE Amos! Definitely my favourite of your suggestions.

Sophronia · 11/09/2017 20:31

Love Amos! I think Casper will become very popular over the next few years.

nodogsinthebedroom · 11/09/2017 21:28

Rowan! Great name.

pilates · 11/09/2017 21:45

Elias
Strongly dislike Casper

IWantACheeseburger · 11/09/2017 21:51

Thanks for the replies.

Not keen on Abel. I am slightly worried about Elliot and Caspar being too popular; and no one being able to pronounce Elias.

I do really love Rowan but my Eldest is called Reuben so I'm not sure about going for another R name.

I absolutely love both of those names. I realty wanted Casper for my ds but dh said no. My friend has the cutest little Amos which makes me love the name more.

Buntysoven · 11/09/2017 23:03

Amos is really really fab. Can't use as it's a surname for a branch of our family

SuperBeagle · 11/09/2017 23:26

I love both.

As someone else said, Americans pronounce Amos very differently, and it sounds ridiculously close to "anus". Basically, they just replace the n in anus with an m. So that makes it lose some of its appeal.

Caspar is fab, but I do prefer this spelling.

I think Caspar is increasing more in popularity than Amos, if that's important to you.

Mrsknackered · 12/09/2017 03:03

Love Amos!

Caspar seems to be everywhere at the moment.

What about Asa?

silverbell64 · 12/09/2017 03:19

dislike both to be honest.

Amos is an old mans name and casper is a ghost.
What about Zak or Max. Nice strong boys names. Elliot is a bit woosy.

Adam is good too.

nooka · 12/09/2017 03:50

Zippy my dog is called Amos after the Emmerdale pub landlord. We always said we'd get another dog and call him Mr Wilks :)

We live in Canada and our friends cannot pronounce Amos at all. He is 'a-moose' to everyone however we introduce him. I just don't think they hear the 'moss' sound at all.

OP what is your other son called? I don't think I'd think a family with sons called Reuben and Amos were necessarily religious, but combos like Reuben, Elijah and Amos or Reuben, Solomon and Amos would make me think you were strongly either Jewish or non conformist Christian (chapel raised in old Emmerdale speak). That might not be a big deal to you of course.

ChocolateCrunch · 12/09/2017 07:25

I like Casper, and don't think I know any. Like Elliot(t) too.

Huffletuff · 12/09/2017 07:28

Amos Diggory. Are you Harry Potter fans?

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/09/2017 07:35

I like Amos

Also like Rowan

Scribblegirl · 12/09/2017 07:42

Amos is a surname to me. Have a good friend called Casper who's 30-odd. Suits him, I like it.

Squidgling · 12/09/2017 07:50

I love Elias (also Elliott, Elijah and Celeb).

I also like a religious boys name for some reason despite not being religious. DP doesn't like them though so never going to be able to use one here.

Squidgling · 12/09/2017 07:50

Caleb not Celeb
