DP and I disagree...

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
MollyHuaCha · 08/09/2017 23:23

Three syllables. But I also put three syllables into the word chocolate.

Henrythehoover · 08/09/2017 23:24

Vylet.

As for handbags I always though they where called hambags as that's how everyone I knew growing up pronounced it so as a child I thought they were made of pig.

TheNext · 08/09/2017 23:25

Vee-oh-lay

WhingyNinja · 08/09/2017 23:26

Oh good, I'm sat saying 'violet, library and handbag' to myself over and over again.

Vye-lut

Han-bag

Lye-bree

Wtf? I thought I was well spoken but am actually a fucking idiot!? Grin

C0untDucku1a · 08/09/2017 23:30

Doing the same. How friday nights have changed Grin conclusion:
Li-bry
Hanbag
Vi-let

MollyHuaCha · 08/09/2017 23:38

Lady Bracknell most definitely says 'hand-bag'.

NC4now · 08/09/2017 23:42

I read Vi-olett.
I say Vhylut.

Heratnumber7 · 09/09/2017 00:11

Vie uh lut

SomeOtherFuckers · 09/09/2017 00:58

Vye-let

LondonLassInTheCountry · 09/09/2017 01:06

Hambag here too :)

Proudmummytodc2 · 09/09/2017 01:48

Vi-let

grufallosfriend · 09/09/2017 07:59

Two syllables: Vile-ett

InstaHun · 09/09/2017 08:04

Vi-let
Hambag
Lie-bree

MyOtherProfile · 09/09/2017 08:06

How do you and dh pronounce it OP?

I say via-lut. And han-bag.

ChainingDaisy · 09/09/2017 08:17

3 syllables, Vi o lut. Also han bag.

chancerprancer · 09/09/2017 08:37

That's very funny @pizzaexpressreview as I had this very revelation yesterday when dd age 6 asked why it's called a HAM-bag. As I corrected her I realised it does sound like that!

grasspigeons · 09/09/2017 08:42

Vye - let.
The girl in incredible says vye-let
And in my opinion, 'Roses are red, vi o let's are blue' - puts too many syllables in the second line.it only makes sense as ' vye-lets are blue'

museumum · 09/09/2017 08:47

I say something a bit like vialet too op. Or viulet. The middle sound is an a/u combination.
I'm Scottish if that helps. I definitely wouldn't annunciate an o sound in the middle.

mamahanji · 09/09/2017 09:41

It was one of my favourites for my dd1.

Vye-lut (lut rhymes with put)

Pizzaexpressreview · 09/09/2017 10:57

"A Handbag" in Oscar Wilde definitely sounds the d but day to day we dont. there's a few like it - not to do with being well spoken but how certain sounds run together and mouth shape etc. In our heads we hear/think were saying a d.

There were other fab examples of words that sound the same but we think are different in our head. it was only a small part of my course though (I got a first but don't retain info!!) so would have to Google to find out all the why's!!

badtime · 09/09/2017 15:22

I say library, han-bag*, and via-let.

I also say Prime Minister instead of priminister.

*I think my pronunciation originated in full Norn Iron spake - it would have been 'hawn-beg' when I was growing up, so I wouldn't have learned the ham-bag pronunciation.

badtime · 09/09/2017 15:23

I realise my comment about Prime Minister doesn't really make sense - most people only pronounce one m, but I somehow pronounce both.

TheImprobableGirl · 09/09/2017 15:25

I pronounce it vy ah lut

Huffletuff · 09/09/2017 15:35

Vi oh let. It has three syllables.

No one says hand bag

Erm, I do. Why would I say ham?! It's not a bag of meat.

twinjocks · 09/09/2017 18:49

Vi-alet
Han-bag
Lie-brerry
