I want to say vi-o-let but I think day to day it generally gets said as vye-let

Vye - o - let. 3 syllables. Same way I pronounce the name of the flower or the colour in the rainbow.

I read it as vi-o-let but when I say it out loud it's vi-let (sorry not helpful).

No-one says hand-bag. A very few people say han-bag and most say ham-bag or something very similar.

I say vye-uh-lut but the middle syllable is very short.

I'm now laying in bed saying out loud vi-o-let... vi-let... handbag... hambag.
I definitely pronounce it vy-uh-lut and hambag

Apparently another one that nobody says is lib-ra-ry. It's either li-bry or li-ba-ry.
So all my years telling my kids to say it properly (li-bra-ry) have been wasted
