Is McKenna okay for a first name (girl) if not, middle name? Thanks

It's a personal thing OP.

To me it's just a dull, ordinary surname. I don't like the hard 'mck' sound at the start.

But that's my personal opinion, why do you like it?

PsychoPumpkin · 07/09/2017 15:22

I don't like it, sorry. It's not a first name. You can use it as a middle but it will look like she has two surnames.

roarityroar · 07/09/2017 15:23

Awful. Sorry. You asked.

PoppyPopcorn · 07/09/2017 15:25

No it's not OK, it's awful. It's a surname for a start.

JamesQueen · 07/09/2017 15:28

I thought people would say it's not a first name but i have read online that it is Confused

PoppyPopcorn · 07/09/2017 15:30

Oh well if "online" say it's a proper name....

Hmm7

Orangebird69 · 07/09/2017 15:31

Awful. Don't do it.

purplecorkheart · 07/09/2017 15:31

I don't like it as first name. I can see the little girl spending a lifetime explaining to people it is her first name. A friend of mine has a surname as a first name and dreads having to do simple things such as making bookings over the phone etc. Once her parents pass away she will be changing it.

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/09/2017 15:32

Terrible

TroysMammy · 07/09/2017 15:32

It's a surname.

HoratioNightboy · 07/09/2017 15:32

I've seen it a few times, so she certainly wouldn't be the only one. I'm not wild about it myself but I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at it.

Have you considered Kenna on is own? It means "comely" and there are a few of them around (in Scotland at least), and possibly a bit more feminine too, given that Mc mean "son".

teaandakitkat · 07/09/2017 15:33

I know a McKenna. Girl. I think it's fine, I've never thought there's anything odd about it.

daisypond · 07/09/2017 15:37

I'm not keen, but then I don't like Mackenzie either as first name, and I don't see much difference between them, and Mackenzie has been around for a while. "Mc/Mac" means "son of", I think, so I think it's odd for a girl. Kenna? Kendra?

Mummaofboys · 07/09/2017 15:39

What's with all the silly name threads today? No it's ok for a name in my opinion and don't believe everything you read on the internet.

bloodymaria · 07/09/2017 15:40

No and no, sorry. As a pp said, Mc would mean 'son' so it makes little sense other than as a surname.

That being said, if you like it then go for it!

greeeen · 07/09/2017 15:45

No!

stopbeingadramallama · 07/09/2017 15:46

I'm sure if you've always known one it wouldn't be too bad but as I've never heard it before, I think it's terrible.

TheVanguardSix · 07/09/2017 15:46

I know a 5 year old girl named Mackenzie and it works. At first Inwas Confused. But kids grow into their names. It's not odd to me at all now.

If you don't go with McKenna, I agree Kenna sounds nice on its own. Kenza? Kezia(h)?

PickleSarnie · 07/09/2017 15:47

I'm assuming the websites you read it was a real first name were American? They love to use random surnames as girls first names.

MammieBear · 07/09/2017 15:51

It is a real name, good meaning surprisingly, Helen Hunt has a daughter with that name.

Allthebestnamesareused · 07/09/2017 15:52

Paul or Meghan?

Helen Hunt - an example of an American using random surnames!

MammieBear · 07/09/2017 15:56

Helen Hunt spelt it Makena slightly better, you may even like Megan.

rabaria · 07/09/2017 15:59

My son's name is now more common as a surname. However, it was originally a first name. I wonder if, back in Viking times, people were aghast at the idea of newly using it as a surname.

Wolfiefan · 07/09/2017 15:59

Don't take online advice about names. If I call my child "Brick" does that make Brick a proper name?!

daisypond · 07/09/2017 16:04

Makena is a different name altogether with different etymology - Hawaiian or East African - with different meanings for both.
