Is McKenna okay for a first name (girl) if not, middle name? Thanks

That's true but you say them both the same and if Op has an change of mind using the "surname" version then this may work better.

harrietm87 · 07/09/2017 16:25

McKenna is an Irish surname. It means son of Kenna, which is an anglicised version of the male name Cionaodha.

Americans often use the mother's maiden name as a first name, which is where the trend has come from.

If you have no connections to the name whatsoever (and I assume you're not Irish) then i think it's weird, especially as there are so many lovely girl's names out there.

Can you imagine calling your daughter Patel or Mikhailov or Lopez? Probably not I'm guessing.

Ohyesiam · 07/09/2017 16:39

As you asked, I think it is a dreadful idea.

It sounds very American. Kenna, Kendra or Kensa are nicer.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 07/09/2017 18:22

I've read online that it's a first name Grin
It isn't.

beachbodyunready · 07/09/2017 18:23

Sorry it's truly terrible.

SilverySurfer · 07/09/2017 18:26

Awful and ghastly.

Fekko · 07/09/2017 18:26

I've met a few Mackenzie's (female Americans) but never a MacKenzie or McKenzie.

They are all surnames. Like Smith and Gutteridge.

Peaceonearthplease · 07/09/2017 18:35

I know a McKenzie McKenzie Hmm

PickleSarnie · 07/09/2017 18:40

I went to Uni with a Sandy Alexander peace Sandy was the shortened version of his first name - Alexander Confused

AccrualIntentions · 07/09/2017 18:41

I don't like it, but I don't like most of the names I read on apps. I really dislike the surname as first name trend.

Fekko · 07/09/2017 18:41

Really - with the proper surname spelling? Being Scottish. I find that just odd!

That's like calling a child 'Von Trap' or 'Del Matteo'.

loobybear · 07/09/2017 18:43

Sorry but there are some surnames that can pass for first names like Blair but McKenna spelled like that is without a doubt a surname.

disappearingninepatch · 07/09/2017 18:44

Is it ridiculous that I hate McKenna but like Makena? Confused Grin

Fekko · 07/09/2017 18:45

I wouldn't pronounce the two the same though.

expatinscotland · 07/09/2017 18:47

How about calling her Jones or Dunlop or Mundell, since you're going for a surname as forename?

Far-Kee-harr-sun? Lovely name. Right up there with Sidebottom.

Ontopofthesunset · 07/09/2017 19:39

I just find it bizarre when there are so many nice existing first names out there that McKenna would cross anyone's mind as a choice. It's just such a common surname and as everyone has said Mc means 'son of' so it's odd, like calling a girl Stephenson. Mind you, there are probably hundreds of little female Stephenson's out there and it probably 'really suits them'.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 07/09/2017 21:06

Wolfiefan - I'm guessing you don't watch The Middle then? They have a kid called Brick, they are American though so that explains a lot.

idontwannaneedthem · 07/09/2017 21:09

Dreadful

DramaAlpaca · 07/09/2017 21:10

I know one, she's American & has sisters called Reagan & Carson. Not my style of names at all.

CryptoFascist · 07/09/2017 21:11

Oh give over.

shopbopdrop · 07/09/2017 21:12

As a first name.. ugh ugh ugh one of the worst I've heard .
