Could this name upset my Mum too much?

DH and I have really struggled to agree a name, & baby is overdue. We've finally discovered we both like Eloise. BUT my Dad's 2nd wife is called Louise (though she's always known as Luce). My Mum has extremely bitter feelings towards her, as there was a long standing affair before my parents split up, so much so she will not allow my sister or I to say her name in front of her, and refers to her as 'that woman'. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking maybe Eloise is a bad idea. Though it is a different name. Do you think it's too close?

Yes, too close. sorry.

mooneyboo · 02/09/2017 12:53

Why not run it by your mum? Maybe text it to her and say, "What do you think of the name Eloise?" Because written it doesn't look as close to Louise as it sounds. If she says anything about it sounding like Louise then just feign ignorance and say, "ah I didn't think about that" but then you have your answer. To be honest I think if your mum thinks it's similar I would try to find another name regardless of whether or not anyone else thinks it's similar.

Plantpot83 · 02/09/2017 13:01

Although they are different names Eloise sounds like it could be a homage to Louise so I'd imagine that it'd upset your mum even if you weren't trying to make any connection.

mooneyboo · 02/09/2017 13:01

What about Elise instead? Similar to Eloise but not so much Louise.

WhichJob · 02/09/2017 13:02

Too close, sorry. And I normally advocate going for the name you want. How about Elodie? Amelie?

BalconyBunting · 02/09/2017 13:11

Too close, that would really hurt your mum and have bad connotations.

Chaffinch4 · 02/09/2017 13:14

As pp said, I'd run it by you mum, assuming that you chat to her about names generally? "What do you think of Eloise?" I'd imagine you'd be able to gauge her reaction.

It is a lovely name. Elise and Elodie are nice too.

Sophronia · 02/09/2017 13:54

I think it's too close, sorry.

thepatchworkcat · 02/09/2017 13:59

I agree, it's too close and not worth causing the upset. Elodie is a nice idea.

PenelopeFlintstone · 02/09/2017 14:00

Too close. Some great alternatives mentioned.

Outdoorsy5644 · 02/09/2017 14:02

Elise is a better fit, given the circumstances.

NeverTwerkNaked · 02/09/2017 14:14

I'd run it past your mum, at least it gives her a chance to think about how she feels

I am still pretty upset that my sister chose to name her son the name of my boyfriend who died, without even giving me the courtesy of a gentle acknowledgement that if might be hard for me. It really knocked me down. I love my nephew now but saying his name still makes my heart twist .

Finola1step · 02/09/2017 14:16

Way too close. Elise or Elisa?

Chloris33 · 02/09/2017 14:29

Thanks. Yes, I guess it's back to the drawing board. A friend's baby is Elisa, so probably not that, and DH dislikes Elodie, though I think it's pretty. We had just about agreed on Clara, and then DH started having misgivings. I'll see if he can be persuaded again! Though in meantime might run the name Eloise past my Mum as suggested.

Cleo?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/09/2017 17:43

Do you like Ellie Elena Eleni. Eliza. Erin. Esme. Erica. Eleah. Elsie. Eleri
Emelia. Emily. Enid

WhichJob · 02/09/2017 17:56

Elsie? Elsa?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/09/2017 17:59

How about Alyssa (Lyssie).

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 02/09/2017 18:00

.... or Estelle ?

Velvian · 02/09/2017 18:25

Eliza?

Velvian · 02/09/2017 18:27

Eloise is a lovely name btw.

PandorasXbox · 02/09/2017 19:26

No way could you do that to your mum.

SuperBeagle · 02/09/2017 22:29

Eloise is much too close to Louise.

Clara is lovely.

sadmonkey1 · 03/09/2017 15:11

I think it's too close.

Eleanor/ Elena aren't a million miles away from Eloise but don't have any similarity to Louise.

TidyDancer · 03/09/2017 15:17

I agree it's too close but I definitely wouldn't run it past her. Even the suggestion would be jarring imo.
