The short list is getting shorter! Which one do you prefer for a little boy...

George Hamish
or
Hamish George?

(Ralph and Hugo are still on the short list too.. but right now the two names above are our agreed favourites .)

Hamish George!

Hamish is much more interesting than George.

PandorasXbox · 30/08/2017 10:10

George Hamish. Unless you are Scottish.

MiniMaxi · 30/08/2017 10:11

Hamish George flows best I think

grufallosfriend · 30/08/2017 10:18

Why should only Scots use Hamish?

BubblesBuddy · 30/08/2017 10:25

It amuses me on these baby name threads that parents are told that certain names belong to certain ethnic or cultural groups and should not be used by anyone else. It is frankly very odd. Lots of common names were French, Irish or even Russian but suddenly we are advised that names are off the menu. Where has this come from?

Use the combination of names that suit your surname. You have to look at your baby and decide which suits him best for an everyday name. I use my second name so nothing is set in stone - just the birth certificate. My parents used my second name from birth because my first name is the same as my mum's. It's what suits the baby not the birth certificate.

Hamish George

demirose87 · 30/08/2017 10:36

I prefer george but hamish is more original if that's what you're after.

TidyDancer · 30/08/2017 10:38

I think Hamish George sounds better but personally I really don't like Hamish so I would go for George first myself.

Sophronia · 30/08/2017 13:02

Hamish George

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/08/2017 13:06

George Hamish

Berrybakecake1 · 30/08/2017 13:11

Bubblesbuddy couldn't agree more.
My ds has a Greek name and dd has an Italian name. I couldn't care less that we are neither.

Love Hamish George he already sounds like a jolly cheeky fellow.

Bubblesoup · 30/08/2017 13:15

Hamish George 💙

Merida83 · 30/08/2017 13:19

Hamish George! Love that name and combo!

CakeRattleandRoll · 30/08/2017 13:55

Another vote for Hamish George.

MammieBear · 30/08/2017 14:02

George Hamish

mooneyboo · 30/08/2017 18:55

I agree that I'd find it strange to meet a child who was called Hamish and wasnt Scottish so would probably go for George Hamish unless you are.

For those asking why- everyone can call their name whatever they want but to me many names have cultural significance. Our names form a big part of our identity, including our cultural identity. It may not be the case for everyone but for many people a name is a big indicator or who they are, their family and where they have come from. There are many names that are commonly used in many different countries but in people's search to find 'unique', and 'different names more and more people are using names from other cultures and countries just to be different or because they like the sound of it. They have every right to do this but to me it risks demeaning what that name represents or means from people from the culture/country it came from.

Mclaren37 · 31/08/2017 05:08

For those asking we are 50% Scottish as a couple, but we live in England and our kids were born in the US / will likely grow up in the south of England. I doubt they will identify as particularly Scottish, but I think it's a nice link to heritage. Interestingly it's the English one of us who prefers Hamish as a first name and the Scot who prefers GeorgeSmile. Thanks for all the feedback!
