Violet is a much nicer name imo. Madison was trendy a couple of years back. They are both quite popular I think.

BaconsarnieHP · 28/08/2017 16:32

Violet is lovely, and unusual.
The girl needs a name! 😀

MissMorganRock · 28/08/2017 16:34

Thank you both Smile

Violet

I don't understand how a name ending in "son" has become a girls name.

But I agree with pp, Violet is a nicer name anyway.

MissMorganRock · 28/08/2017 16:38

@BikeRunSki - Alison is the same?

Madison is not a girl's name, became popular because of the film Splash surely?

Violet is lovely.

Pemba · 28/08/2017 16:50

Yes, but in the case of 'Madison' it does actually mean 'son'. It comes from a surname meaning 'son of Maud'. It got popular following the 80s film 'Splash' where the mermaid character picks it as her human name after seeing it on a street sign. Madeleine is prettier and more of a proper name.

Don't really like 'Violet' as the pronunciation sounds like 'vile' and 'violent'. It just doesn't sound attractive, although the meaning is nice.
How about the French version Violette (vee-oh-let), or Viola?

MissMorganRock · 28/08/2017 16:58

Madison is a girls' name Grin it's actually rather popular.

Not keen on Violette or Viola.

Love the name Violet.

TidyDancer · 28/08/2017 17:22

@MissMorganRock I think what people were trying to say is that it wasn't a girl's name until Splash came out. So it's not really a girl's name but it's become acceptable as one because of the mermaid in the film.

If you like the nn Maddie, how about Madeleine?

Violet

Mightybanhammer · 28/08/2017 18:32

Violet - beautiful, delicate name.

TwoKidsAndCounting · 28/08/2017 18:46

Madison is a lovely name, why do people analyse these things. Violet is an old fashioned name, shortened to vi, maddie/madison much nicer and more modern, can't understand this old name (vera, june, florence) revival

somewhereovertherain · 28/08/2017 18:48

Not Madison horrible conman and from a crap film. If going for Maddy as a short go for Madeleine

I really don't like Violet and don't really like Madison, but I like Maddie. So I'd chose Madison!

AccrualIntentions · 28/08/2017 19:15

Violet. Really dislike Madison, in my mind it's a bitchy mean girls type name (although I don't think I have anything to base that on Hmm)

ShotsFired · 28/08/2017 19:20

If you like Maddie, call her Maddie!

I honestly don't get these in depth analyses of what a nickname will be, when the point of them is that they evolve, they aren't designated.

If you want her to be called Maddie everyday, call her that.

If not, she'll end up being called Grotty or Angel or Binbag or something totally unrelated to her name, but which is a loving memory or familial in-joke and which means so much more than some pre-determined "official nickname"
