Libby? Do you immediately think of Elizabeth?

We like the name Libby if our bump turns out to be a girl but it appears to be a nickname/derivative of Elizabeth.

A very close family member is called Elizabeth.

Does it scream Elizabeth to you?

I would also think of Olivia.

NannyR · 27/08/2017 00:31

Could possibly be Liberty, but it is usually known as a shortening for Elizabeth.

GlitteryFluff · 27/08/2017 00:31

Thanks zesty.
Do you think Libby is too nicknamey and not a 'proper' name for birth certificate?

I know two who are just Libby. Aged mid twenties and about 13 so I'd say it's perfectly fine as a name on it's own.

GlitteryFluff · 27/08/2017 00:33

Thanks nannyr.
I really like it but don't want it to be too similar when there are lots of names to pick from! Just I really like it

Sorry cross posted.
That's what I want to hear!

I do like the name Libby but I would assume it was short for something else. But if its a name you like you should go for it. Its not a bad name on its own.

GlitteryFluff · 27/08/2017 00:44

Thanks zesty.
I like it and think I'd be happy with using it even though it might be a bit nicknamey but not if everyone will say 'oh as in Elizabeth, like X (family member).

I wouldn't think of Elizabeth at all. I know one - who is Liberty...but I think it's a really nice stand alone name.

shesthecatsmother · 27/08/2017 01:09

DSis is an Olivia and is nicknamed Libby so it makes me think of her!

DuggeeHugs · 27/08/2017 02:42

I think Libby in 2017 is more likely to be a standalone name rather than a nickname. If I assumed nickname it would be shortened from Liberty.

It sounds lovely as a standalone name

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 27/08/2017 02:50

Love the name Libby as my second daughter is Libby Rose Smile, she's 3 in September & nobody has ever asked if its a nickname for Elizabeth, Olivia etc Smile

mathanxiety · 27/08/2017 03:24

I think of tins of mandarin oranges.

SuperBeagle · 27/08/2017 03:34

It is traditionally a shortening of Isabel and Elizabeth.

I'm an Elizabeth, so I would automatically assume that a Libby was "formally" Elizabeth. In the same way that I'd assume a Lizzy was.

But that's not really a big issue. If you like Libby alone, go for it.

Jooni · 27/08/2017 03:49

Honestly, I would assume a Libby was Elizabeth on the BC, but I don't see anything wrong with it as a standalone. Nickname names are popular at the moment.

mangomama91 · 27/08/2017 04:51

I would think of Elizabeth but only because I do have a Libby who is an Elizabeth.

Before then I wouldn't have questioned whether a Libby was an Elizabeth shortened or just Libby.

I LOVE the name :)

Really Libby is so much nicer if it's short for something - Elizabeth, Olivia, anything really. To me it just sounds very child-like or at least informal despite being very sweet. As pp said nickname names are popular at the moment - but that trend will date.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 27/08/2017 05:27

I would assume their real name was Elizabeth and that Libby was just a nickname.

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 27/08/2017 05:34

I would assume her full name was Elizabeth. I personally much prefer it as nn, it sounds quite informal and childlike as a stand alone name. The Olivias I know tend to get LIvvy rather than Libby.

PotteringAlong · 27/08/2017 06:08

I'd assume Elizabeth

tinypop4 · 27/08/2017 06:09

I consider it a stand alone name.
I also absolutely love it- was keen for DD to have this name but DH wasn't keen so we chose something else. I hoped to convince him for baby 2 but he turned out to be a boy Smile.
Lovely name use it!'

lljkk · 27/08/2017 06:22

I would assume Liberty on BC. Olivia as 2nd guess.
Elizabeth turns into... Lisa, Beth, Betty, Lizzie. Not Libby.

Cailleach666 · 27/08/2017 06:29

Yes I think of Elizabeth and also Orange Juice.

Libby? Do you immediately think of Elizabeth?
