Libby? Do you immediately think of Elizabeth?

We like the name Libby if our bump turns out to be a girl but it appears to be a nickname/derivative of Elizabeth.

A very close family member is called Elizabeth.

Does it scream Elizabeth to you?

I would assume Elizabeth

nooka · 27/08/2017 06:35

Libby is one of many traditional diminutives of Elisabeth/Elizabeth. If I met a Libby (I know a small one) I'd therefore assume her full name was Elizabeth. I can see how Libby could be used for Liberty, but that's a pretty unusual name surely (especially compared to Elizabeth). I can't see how you'd get Libby from Olivia as there is no 'b' in there - Livvy would be the obvious diminutive instead.

So yes you could choose just Libby (although to me it is a little girl name really), but I'd have thought it quite likely that at least some of your family might think it was a tribute to your relative.

I have a 22 month old called Libby Lois. Not short for anything. People do ask and we just say nope, not short for anything. We really loved it. And if you love a name and importantly agree on a name then grab it with both hands!!

I sometimes worry its too young a name for a grown up woman. But she can use her middle name if it's a massive issue!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/08/2017 06:37

Yes. Ds2 was going to be Elizabeth mn Libby.

SuperBeagle · 27/08/2017 07:08

lljkk Except that Libby is traditionally a shortening of Elizabeth. That's where "Libby" came from.

I also don't understand how people are getting Libby from Olivia. That's Liv/Livvy, surely?

Ijustwantaquietlife · 27/08/2017 07:10

I think of um bong

TestTubeTeen · 27/08/2017 07:38

I hadn't really connected Libby to Elizabeth.

Susiethetortoiseshellcat · 27/08/2017 07:47

I also think of the neighbours character. She was Elizabeth, wasn't she?

Yes I'd think Elizabeth or Elsbeth

brieandcrackers · 27/08/2017 08:54

I know three Libbys (okay one of them is a cat) and all are short for Liberty.

Love the name!!

MummysMaison · 27/08/2017 08:55

My niece is Libby and I've never really considered it short for anything. I love the name.

GinIsIn · 27/08/2017 08:57

Yes I would assume short for Elizabeth

AuntieStella · 27/08/2017 09:00

Yes, I'd link it to Elizabeth.

But if you are invariably going to call her Libby day to day, is that really going to cause any difficulties with an Elizabeth elsewhere in the family? What is her NN?

I have known one Libby whose full name was Liberty

InvisibleKittenAttack · 27/08/2017 09:01

I'd assume short for Elizabeth too.

I'm afraid I'm another one who doesn't like nicknames as the whole name, mainly because if the nickname is very cute then it's hard to sound professional as a young adult, and often don't suit middle aged people, but Libby isn't too cutesy. I would still put a "grown up" name on the birth certificate, even if you never chose to use it yourself.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 27/08/2017 09:03

I know 3 'Libbys'. All have the longer name Elizabeth.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 27/08/2017 09:04

Oh and agree, you just introduce her to everyone in the family as Libby, you don't have to tell them it's Elizabeth if you put that on the BC, having more than one family member with the same traditional name but with different nicknames used to be very common.

IDoDaChaCha · 27/08/2017 09:06

I've never understood how Elizabeth becomes Libby. To me Elizabeth becomes Lizzy.

insancerre · 27/08/2017 09:10

I have cared for many Libby's who have Libby on their birth certificates
I am seeing shortened names a lot on children's birth certificates

Mrsknackered · 27/08/2017 09:26

I'd assume Liberty or Elizabeth. I would be surprised if I met just a Libby on its own, and I'm not usually one of those who thinks everyone should have a 'formal' name.

TonicAndTonic · 27/08/2017 09:30

I would assume it was short for Elizabeth

GColdtimer · 27/08/2017 09:41

I would assume it was short for liberty or Elizabeth.

I would give her an alternative on birth certificate. You ever have to call her it - dds friend is Hetty but on her bc it's Heather so she has a more professional name to use when she is older if she wants. Nobody has ever called her it, not even teachers.

bunningsbunny · 27/08/2017 09:53

I'd assume Olivia too - a v sound softens very easily into a b sound when it comes to nicknames!

Dsis is an Elizabeth - and I never think of her as being possibly a Libby. Mind you I never think of her as a Liz or Lizzie either!

weasle · 27/08/2017 11:11

Yes it's short for Elizabeth.
Lovely names but if you don't want the link with Elizabeth don't use Libby even on its own as most people will assume it is used in honour of your family member Elizabeth.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 27/08/2017 11:43

It's already been mentioned, but I love Liberty which could be shortened to Libby. I had it on my list for dc2, but it's a boy!
