Libby? Do you immediately think of Elizabeth?

We like the name Libby if our bump turns out to be a girl but it appears to be a nickname/derivative of Elizabeth.

A very close family member is called Elizabeth.

Does it scream Elizabeth to you?

I'd immediately assume it was short for Elizabeth. It's fine as a short form, but I definitely wouldn't give it as a proper name. I don't like the actual sound of Libby either.

alletik · 27/08/2017 11:46

I prefer libby as a shortened version of Elizabeth, but I know two girls who are just Libby. Therefore, I think it's perfectly fine as a name in its own right.

AccrualIntentions · 27/08/2017 11:48

I'd automatically assume Elizabeth.

I know three. One is NN for Liberty, one is NN for Elizabeth and one is stand alone Libby.

I love it as a name. I think it's enough of a name in its own right now to be used just as Libby.

I know one that is short for Liberty and another who is just Libby. I love it. I really don't see the point of calling a child one thing that you really love but putting something else on the birth certificate!

Thanks all
I think it's a no-goer for us looking at these responses.
I would have been happy to go for just Libby - but not if it's automatically assumed she'd be an Elizabeth/or tribute to close family member.
Back to the drawing board!

My hearing is bad so I think that's why for me I couldn't even tell the difference between Livvy & Libby. Well, after hearing it about 50 times, maybe I could tell.

Amber0685 · 27/08/2017 12:17

No it doesn't to me, I went to school with a Libby (not short for anything)

GColdtimer · 27/08/2017 22:24

Op you could call her Liberty but always call her Libby. Birth announcement Liberty (libby) Surname.

Unless you hate liberty!

DramaAlpaca · 27/08/2017 22:26

I would assume Liberty or Elizabeth.

TheweewitchRoz · 27/08/2017 23:10

Definitely assume Elizabeth (& would hope its that too - I hate the trend of nicknames now being names in their own right!).

Whinesalot · 27/08/2017 23:11

I know a Libby. I've never ever given it a thought as to whether it is shortened from something. I've assumed that's her name.
