How would you pronounce Marie as i am worried it will be mistaken for Mary Shock I also like the pronunciation Mar ree with emphasis on the MAR, but don't know how this would be spelled? Mari maybe? Can anyone help me out GrinApologies if this is confusing!

Muh-REE, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

But my grandmother insists that Marie is MAH-ree, with emphasis on the first syllable and a longer "ah" sound.

I thought Mairi was a legitimate name pronounced MAH-ree.

Chaffinch4 · 26/08/2017 21:42

I agree with SuperbBeagle:

Marie - muh-REE
Mairi - MAH-ree

grasspigeons · 26/08/2017 21:44

I'd say m -REE but a lot of people, particularly older people say MAH-ree

I wouldn't muddle it with Mary

I think Mairi is MAH-ree or VAH-ree in some places.

NC4now · 26/08/2017 21:47

Marie is Ma-REE or can be pronounced Marry

Maire is another spelling which is Marry pn

Mary is MAry

Know a little girl called Marya. Nice name, nice to pronounce.

NC4now · 26/08/2017 21:48

Oh and from going to RC school in the 80s/90s I know loads of Marie/Maria/Ann-Maries. They never got called Mary.

NC4now · 26/08/2017 21:50

TvTan is that pronounced Maria?

RosieTheRiveting · 26/08/2017 22:00

Mhairi is vhari
Mairi is Mahree

TvTan · 26/08/2017 22:03

No. It is pronounced Maarr-iy-ah, as it is spelled, I guess. I er read the op a bit wrong.

nodogsinthebedroom · 26/08/2017 23:30

It's actually Ma-ree

Agustarella · 27/08/2017 09:29

I'm sure the OP's preferred pronunciation is the most traditional one. Think Marie Lloyd for example.

It's nice.

daisypond · 27/08/2017 11:38

I know three Maries. One has the stress on the end syllable - Ma-REE - the other has the stress on the first - MA-ree - the other one is more like "marry". Not helpful, I know. I'd never pronounce it as Mary, though. That's different.
