Boys name help needed! Alfred, or...??

DC1/DS due early Oct. DH and I had a tough time agreeing on a name but finally settled a couple of months ago on Alfred Eric. It was initially my suggested and DH not keen but then he came round and now really loves it. And I did initially too! But now I'm having a wobble!

What do you all think? Not sure I can face going back to the name books again as we had such a tough time finding one we both liked before... I seem to go through phases with names - find one I love for a few weeks, then start having doubts. Although I should mention this is not unlike me - decisiveness not my strong point and I do have a tendency to overthink...

I also really like Isaac but don't think that goes with Eric, which is important for me to include for family reasons. Also love Arthur, but close relative has that name so can't use it.

Help! What do you all think? Advice/suggestions welcome!

Alfred is lovely, as is Isaac and Arthur but Alfred is more uncommon. Also plenty of nn options. I think Alfred Eric or Arthur Eric sound best, not sure on the flow of Isaac Eric

PandorasXbox · 25/08/2017 11:18

I quite like Alfred but can't stand Alfie. So I would choose Arthur.

Glumglowworm · 25/08/2017 11:20

I'm not a fan of Alfred or Eric sorry , I much prefer Isaac or Arthur

LadyoftheLake123 · 25/08/2017 11:26

Thanks, all.

Eric I am keen to include to honour my lovely grandpa, who died about 10 years ago. As it happens the name also has family significance for DH, so works well for both of us as a middle name choice.

Arthur I love but it's a close relative's name so can't use it - just mentioned as an example of the sort of thing I like if that makes sense.

I like Alfred Eric, a good solid pair of names with lots of history.

The only thing that puts me off Alfred is that I can't bear Alfie. I'm not keen on Isaac and you are right, it doesn't sound as good with Eric.

Arthur is wonderful, shame you can't use it. I know one in his teens and one in his 90s and it suits both of them perfectly.

TheVanguardSix · 25/08/2017 11:28

Aelred as an alternative?
I love this name.

Our DS2 is Alec but this doesn't work with Eric.

It's so lovely that you're honouring your grandfather. Smile

Viviennemary · 25/08/2017 11:32

Not keen on either of these names I'm afraid. Arthur is OK but personally not that keen. Isaac is better.

WaxOnFeckOff · 25/08/2017 11:33

Albert/Albie
Frederick/Freddie - though Frederick Eric is a bit of a mouthful (Isaac would slot in well though)
Edgar/Edwin/Edward?

LadyWithLapdog · 25/08/2017 11:41

How about Alaric? Old English name and similar enough to the names you like. I love it.

LaContessaDiPlump · 25/08/2017 11:43

Alfred is lovely, and abbreviates to Al, or Alf, or Alfie, or Fred. Plenty of options so people don't judge quite as harshly Grin

ElfEars · 25/08/2017 11:49

I like Alfred. A similar alternative would be Albert Eric.

lenaleave · 25/08/2017 11:50

Stick to Alfred Eric, it's a nice name (and keep reminding yourself why you choose it in the first place!)

Monkeypuzzle32 · 25/08/2017 12:24

I like Alfred and it was on the list for us but Im having a girl

Archibald (Archie)
Frederick (Freddie)
William
Wilfred
Albert

stellarfox · 25/08/2017 13:38

It's a good name! I'd like Eric Alfred even better

early30smum · 25/08/2017 14:52

I wouldn't use Eric personally, but totally understand the wish to use a family name.

Alfred is nice, and if you love it, you should go with it!

Other suggestions in case:

Wilfred Eric (nn Wilf or Freddie or Wilfy)
Hugo Eric
Rafferty Eric (nn Raff or Raffy)
William Eric
Henry Eric
George Eric
Samuel Eric
Isiah Eric (similar to Isaac but sounds better?)
Oliver Eric

YokoReturns · 25/08/2017 14:56

DS1 is Alfred nn Freddie
DS2 is Albert nn Bertie

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/08/2017 16:04

I agree with @stellarfox, Eric Alfred is great !

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/08/2017 16:05

Eric Alfred.

Sophronia · 25/08/2017 16:18

Alfred Eric is great!

Imnotatypicalsausage · 25/08/2017 16:57

Alfred is cute. Shorten to Alf rather than Alfie or Freddie as they are both quite common. Stick with it x

Threeandabit · 25/08/2017 23:06

I like it. Smile

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 25/08/2017 23:15

I have a 1 yr old Alfred. I obviously love it. Our Alfred is Alfred john (john being a family name) but I think Alfred Eric is fab!
One of the reasons we chose the name was the nickname options he is currently Alfie or Alf.

HappyLollipop · 25/08/2017 23:28

I like Alfred especially as Alfie and Freddie are really cute nicknames to have! I also love Isaac but I'm biased though as it's my sons name Grin

CakeRattleandRoll · 26/08/2017 07:07

Alfred Eric is fine. Agree with pp suggestion of Edward Eric. Or how about Alexander or Alistair?

LadyoftheLake123 · 28/08/2017 13:24

Thank you all for suggestions and feedback! Smile

Alistair, Archibald and Alexander are all gorgeous and names I have considered, but DH doesn't like any of them!

Had never heard the name Alaric before LadyWithLapdog and I agree it is a fantastic name - very romantic! I guess I couldn't have Alaric Eric though (sounds a bit like the same name said twice!) - same with Frederick I think, although that is another really lovely name.

Perhaps we will stick with Alfred after all! Thanks all for your help Smile
