Can I call my child a name similar to my own?

Pondering baby names at the moment for our second dc on the way and my absolute favourite at the moment is 'Ella' and me and DP both love it. (This is a rare thing to happen!!)

But my name is Isabella, and I'm known as 'belle' to my friends/ everyone.

I told my sister that we really liked the name and if dc is a girl we will probably call her that but she's shocked as it's so similar to my name.

So honest opinions please... would your face also look like this - Hmm if i announced it as it's so similar to my own? Is it too close?

Id go for it.

Though my commonly used nickname is also dds name backwards. Didnt realise til after she was registered.

Quite a lot of people give their children their exact name. So if that's okay, then why wouldn't a "similar" name be acceptable?

early30smum · 20/08/2017 20:07

Totally fine. What is your first DC's name?

Agree with mmmmnuts

I'd say fine too (unless you're Bella, have another daughter called Stella and your surname is Weller).

My son's name is the shortened version of mine (which is what most people call me). For example, Samantha shortened to Sam for me, and son called Sam - it's not Sam but you get the gist.

We never intended to call him by the name I go by but it was honestly the only name which suited him when he was born and I resisted it for a couple of weeks because I thought people would think I was being egotistical.

My DDs name is a shortened version of my name, just different spelling. I never even realised until someone pointed it out!

In my part of Ireland it is common enough for a parent and child to have the same name not to mind sat similar. I think Bella is a beautiful name and as long as you and your dp like it who cares what someone else thinks.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/08/2017 23:17

Of course you can, it's a beautiful name.
Lots of children are given the name of one of their parents.
