Jude or Elwood?

Hello Lovely Ladies, I was hoping for some opinions on the following names, DD has quite an unusual name, but I always get the response "what a pretty name".
So I want a name that has a similar impact on people.
Jude Alexander: we love this name however it seems to be coming a very popular name which is what worries me as I don't want a name that is too popular.

Elwood George: This we do love as we are big fans of the Blues Brothers, its different but still quite classy sounding. Also I quite like the Idea of Woody as a nickname, however I'm worried this name is a little too "out there"

Opinions welcome x

If you really like the Blues Brothers, why not Jake Elwood?

soundsystem · 22/08/2017 06:06

I prefer Jude. I know a little Elwood and he's lovely. Usually called El for short, rather than Woody.

I find Jude very feminine sounding, maybe because it's sometimes short for Judy.

In German Jude is pronounced Yoo-de and means Jew. Not a name for hat travels well.

Elwood sounds much more masculine and strong, and it works better in other languages.

sashimiyummies · 22/08/2017 13:35

I love Elwood! Love the blue brothers. Jude is nice but lots of them around.

Circumlocutor · 22/08/2017 13:54

Woody would surely be on the receiving end of lots of erection gags?

rainbowterrier · 22/08/2017 14:10

Loads of baby and toddler Judes about at the mo. Nice name though. Elwood...hmmmmmm...not my style at all but Woody would be a cute nn for a little boy. Potentially embarrassing for a teenager though...

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 22/08/2017 17:14

Tbh the only Judes I actually know are women whose full name is Judith.

I don't know that many kids though.

LuLuuuuuuu · 22/08/2017 17:16

Not keen on either to be honest with you OP but I would pick Jude Alexander

Elwood is a name I just do not personally like . Also the Woody nickname and its concoctions .

spankhurst · 22/08/2017 17:19

Jude is lovely.
Elwood sounds slightly comedic to me, for some reason.

Tattybogle89 · 22/08/2017 17:21

Jude matches faith better. Elwood isn't nice.
I don't think jude or faith are unusual though at all.

Madbengalmum · 22/08/2017 17:25

Jude is really getting to be a common name for babies around here.
I really dont like either name to be honest.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2017 17:41

1:300 boy babies called Jude last year. So not wildly common. Unlikely to be more than 1 in a class, for example

bluestarthread · 22/08/2017 17:51

I would completely have gone with Elwood and Woody for short - in fact DD wishes she were a boy and had been the lucky recipient! Girls only here though.
Go for what you love, names grow with the child and rarely have lingering associations with their inspiration.

Turquoise0wl · 23/08/2017 20:23

Jude Alexander - 100% Smile

lisara79 · 23/08/2017 20:40

I prefer Jude.

Singingforsanity · 23/08/2017 22:47

I love Jude, it's DS's middle name but I don't know any others (I'm in Scotland). I also love Elwood though, it reminds me of Elwood P Dowd from Harvey, if you haven't seen it watch it! He's such a lovely character. Smile Edwin or Edward also alternatives to Elwood.

ABitOTT · 24/08/2017 00:09

I know no Judes & no Elwoods.

Personal preference is for Jude; however, you should really ignore us lot here & anyone else who has an opinion!!! This is your child & whatever name you give him will be perfect.

mbb1 · 24/08/2017 00:16

They're both dreadful

MrsC2012x · 24/08/2017 06:33

Thank you all for your lovely opinions, and some not so lovely ones, if you like neither you probably should have kept scrolling to another post and not commented. As I asked "which do you Prefer"

We will take the nicer messages into consideration and hopefully find a name for this little one once he's here 🙌🏻 Thanks again x

Ahh go with whatever makes you smile as you say it, I'm sure you could have Elwood with people using such names as Albert, Wolfram and they get on fine, once in school doesn't matter what name you have children will find something to say. I'm more inclined to say go with Elwood as you both are blues brothers fans and I think that personal tie is lovely. There have been lots of admirable Wood's throughout history and it never held them back yes its a bit unique but in a country where every other girl is Evie and boy is Alfie I say GO FOR IT.

ilivebythesea · 24/08/2017 08:02

If you love the name, I say go for it. Yes, it's unusual, but people get used to all sorts of names. Isn't Zoe Ball's son called Woody?

If it's the El bit of Elwood you like, but are unsure about using the name, how about Ellery, Elijah, Elliot or Ellis?

IdaBiscuit · 24/08/2017 08:22

Jude is very common here, it's like Noah was a few years ago.

Elwood is ok but Elwyn is even better.

supermangotnothingonme · 24/08/2017 09:35

I prefer Jude but you you be shortening Elwood at all? It would probably get shorten to el at school etc

BertrandRussell · 24/08/2017 11:48

I mentioned Elwood to teenage ds, and I am afraid he said "Woody".......... and sniggered.
