Jude or Elwood?

Hello Lovely Ladies, I was hoping for some opinions on the following names, DD has quite an unusual name, but I always get the response "what a pretty name".
So I want a name that has a similar impact on people.
Jude Alexander: we love this name however it seems to be coming a very popular name which is what worries me as I don't want a name that is too popular.

Elwood George: This we do love as we are big fans of the Blues Brothers, its different but still quite classy sounding. Also I quite like the Idea of Woody as a nickname, however I'm worried this name is a little too "out there"

Opinions welcome x

There are Jude's in every toddler group (0-4yr) here too. Elwood/woody is very nice

elevenclips · 20/08/2017 10:02

Jude is lovely

PlausibleSuit · 20/08/2017 10:13

Woody is a slang term for 'erection', IME.

Jude Alexander is nice. Or flip it round? Alexander Jude. Alexander is less common than it was and there are several nickname options. I know an Alexander who goes by Alex or Lex.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 20/08/2017 10:17

Nude is nice though.

I'd just like to urge you not to pick Nude.

MrsC2012x · 20/08/2017 10:29

Empress!Grin
Haha I thought you were throwing an alternative name into the mix.

The way this post is going Nude may be an option Grin x

I much prefer Jude- it was on our list and is lovely.

MrsCharlieD · 20/08/2017 11:44

I have a Jude who's 3 and I hate that it's getting popular. It's been my favourite name for 25 years since my dad first introduced me to the Beatles as a child. Much prefer it to Elwood which I'm afraid I'm not keen on.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 20/08/2017 13:29

Jude. It's not unusual, but it's not exactly commonly used either. I think I only know of one.

Elwood is less usual, but it's not as nice imo. If you want the "oh how lovely" comments you enjoy with your DD, I don't know if Elwood will always get that response, (sorry - might be wrong of course). I think it could be a bit marmite.

KeiraH · 20/08/2017 14:48

I ve never heard Elwood before but I am seriously liking it! I also love nn Woody and considered Woodrow if the girl I am carrying turned out to be a boy. We also considered Jude but it's everywhere at the moment and that has put me off slightly

MsJuniper · 20/08/2017 16:36

I know a little Elwood, I was Shock at first but like it now. They are a pretty cool family.

Mrscropley · 20/08/2017 16:38

Would be worried he would get Elly!!

Enidblyton1 · 20/08/2017 16:41

Ooh tough choice! I like them both.
Is your DDs name as unusual as Elwood or more like Jude? Perhaps go for a similar level of unusual??

Think I'd have to flip a coin...

Reluctant2ndtimer · 20/08/2017 16:47

I have an Elwood, it's a great name Grin
I picked it because I wanted something unusual and we've only met one other so far. It means 'from the ancient forest' which I love but I also love Elwood P Dowd from the film Harvey.
Jude would have been my other choice but my brother is called jude and that would have gone right to his head.
For what it's worth, I had some rude comments from both my mum and mother in law at first but but they've both grown to like the name and I frankly couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks. Smile

BarbaraOcumbungles · 20/08/2017 16:59

I work with a Firstname Elwood who calls himself Elwood in a Bondesque attempt to be cool. It doesn't work.

I prefer Jude.

MrsC2012x · 20/08/2017 17:44

Oh wow its nice to hear there are a few other Elwood's out there. But not too many Smile

My Dd name is Faith if that helps with peoples opinions x

My vote would be Jude. I think Jude and Faith sounds lovely 😊

Sophronia · 20/08/2017 19:17

Jude.

David Cameron's son is Elwyn, not Elwood or Aelward.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/08/2017 19:29

Elwood George is fabulous ❤️⭐️

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/08/2017 19:33

I know nine Jude's !
Nickname for Elwood is usually Woody.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 20/08/2017 19:39

Elwood. Elwood P Dowd is one of the loveliest characters in cinema history. It is a marvellous name.

Viviennemary · 20/08/2017 19:45

Ellwood is awful. Jude is OK but I'm not keen personally. But it's not awful.

ScarletSienna · 20/08/2017 19:49

I wonder if Jude is popular in certain parts of the country more than others as some know so many yet it isn't that high in the stats?

I know more Elwoods (well one compared to no Judes).

Imnotatypicalsausage · 22/08/2017 05:13

Jude is much nicer and goes better with Faith. It's not that popular, and goes well with Alexander.

Elwood sounds like a surname to me and is quite a harsh name.

nooka · 22/08/2017 05:45

Faith and Jude feel quite similar in vibe to me. Elwood sounds like a surname (and I really dislike surnames as first names). I think the OP will get very mixed reactions to Elwood, classy is not what comes to my mind, sorry and Woody is really really unfortunate! I think the love of Blue Brothers might be better featuring as a middle name.

blueskyinmarch · 22/08/2017 05:54

My first though on seeing Elwood was Legally Blonde as the main character is called Elle Woods. I now can't get the image of Reece Witherspoon out my mind and am
Associating the name with a very blonde pink female. I also associate the name Jude with females as I know two - both females. Don't dislike either name but those are the images that they conjure for me.
