See this suggested quite a lot and I think I like it, but is it "INZ" or "IN-iss" or something else? Anyone have or know one?

I always thought it was the same as Inez. Ih-nez. Don't know if I'm right though!

Strangeswelling · 30/07/2017 11:19

It's a surname!

Pronounced Inniss. It's a Scots surname.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 30/07/2017 11:23

Innes the surname is IN is. The girl's name is spelt Ines, pronounced in EZ.

AreWeDoingThisNow · 30/07/2017 11:24

I know an Innes, she uses her middle name though, so I'm no help. I only know she's Innes because I've seen her post. I'd never heard of it before that. She's in her 50s.

I'd say in-nez

ChrisPrattsFace · 30/07/2017 11:25

I know two, both pronounced In-Niz.

Sophronia · 30/07/2017 11:26

Innes is a male Scottish name pronounced IN-iss. It's the anglicised form of Angus.

Ines or Inez is a female Spanish name pronounced in-EZ. It's the Spanish form of Agnes.

Sophronia · 30/07/2017 11:27

*Aonghus not Angus

Fozzleyplum · 30/07/2017 11:35

I agree with PPs.
Innes is usually a surname, pronounced Innis, with the emphasis on the In. Ines is a first name, pronounced Innez, with the emphasis on the -ez.

twattymctwatterson · 30/07/2017 11:37

I know a male Innes. It's pronounced inniss. He's Scottish

ConstanceCraving · 30/07/2017 11:41

I always thought it was Spanish.

weebarra · 30/07/2017 12:45

I know quite a few. IN-iss.
In Scotland. We did the surname as first name thing for ages before everyone else!

PopcornNRedwine · 30/07/2017 12:47

Definitely IN-iss

MikeUniformMike · 30/07/2017 14:14

I know an Innes. Pronounced INiss. I think it means island. Surname or Boy's name.

Ines or Inez is a form of Agnes. Girl's name. Accent on e depending on the language.

Crunchymum · 30/07/2017 14:58

Ines is the Spanish version?

SonicBoomBoom · 30/07/2017 15:01

In-iss.

ClopySow · 30/07/2017 15:04

I know scottish male Innes - In iss

Also know portuguese female ines - inesh

LinoleumBlownapart · 30/07/2017 15:20

Can be in-ez in Portuguese as well, depends on the accent/country. Many Brazilians don't sh the s's on the end of words.

Jooni · 30/07/2017 18:19

Thanks everyone sounds like "IN-iss" is the consensus. I've always read it as "INZ" when I've seen it suggested on here but recently heard the proper pronunciation and quite like it.

Sorry, should have clarified that it's definitely the Scottish male/surname name Innes I meant and not the female name Ines.

Sorry,

I had a Serbian friend who pronounced it like 'penis' without the 'p'

bigkidsdidit · 30/07/2017 18:23

There are LOADS in Scotland. Three in DS's boys brigade. Inn-is.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 30/07/2017 18:24

Ines is girl's name in Spanish, Portuguese and French (they use different accents over the 'e'). It means 'Agnes'.

It's our front runner for DD2 as I'm half Spanish.
