I'm aware this is quite a popular name in Wales (I'm half Welsh and was born there but we live in the north of England now) but I don't know any girls called Seren in real life. I'm not sure it'll actually work with our surname, but it's the only name my DH and I have remotely agreed on yet.

Any thoughts? If you heard this would you be like "oh god not another Seren" or think it was weird?

I like it, its a pretty name, I know one her mum's Scottish living in Ireland

TurquoiseDress · 22/08/2017 19:13

It seems lovely but I automatically think it needs a A on the end to make Serena

Or I think of Serene

RosieTheRiveting · 22/08/2017 21:22

Lovely.

I also like Eleri, Bethan and Ffion as Welsh names.

MikeUniformMike · 23/08/2017 21:39

Eleri, Bethan and Ffion sound like women in their 50s. Pretty names but they belong to the same generation as Sarah, Clare and Lisa, but with the added bonus of being likely to be mispronounced.

hmyh23 · 23/08/2017 22:18

I think it's lovely, I teach a girl called Seren and she is also lovely!

Viviennemary · 24/08/2017 00:42

Not heard of that. I'd assume somebody had missed off the a at the end.

llangennith · 24/08/2017 01:05

Quite popular/common here in South Wales.

Circumlocutor · 24/08/2017 01:09

I'd pronounce it to rhyme with heron but is it meant to sound more like the 'seren' in serenity? I'd hate to pick a name and not pronounce it as it is in its home country.

brieandcrackers · 24/08/2017 01:31

Will always associate it with the Bangor University student newspaper and the number seven.

Still like it though!!

oldbirdy · 24/08/2017 07:36

Pronunciation: starts like Sarah, but changes to a 'wren' sound
SER-wren
At least that is how the 2 in dd's class say it!

MikeUniformMike · 24/08/2017 19:42

oldbirdy is right. The stress is on the first syllable not the second.

In the same way as in Sarah or Susan not Suranne or Suzanne.

RosieTheRiveting · 24/08/2017 20:22

I know a six year old Ffion

Notso · 24/08/2017 20:29

The mispronouncing would put me off, Sarun, Serene, etc and now I speak a teeny bit of welsh I know it means star and I think star is weird name for a child IYSWIM.

MikeUniformMike · 24/08/2017 20:31

Of course, you can say it whichever way you like, but don't say it's welsh if you say it in a non-welsh speaking way.

I think it's a bit like the name Shannon. Or Honey.

GinasGirl · 24/08/2017 20:33

It was on our list, I love it!

OpheliaHamlet · 24/08/2017 20:35

Gorgeous name (indeed, one I hope to be using very soon!)

Biddlyboo · 24/08/2017 20:37

Love it, I wanted it for my dd2, but dh said no :(

Glumglowworm · 24/08/2017 21:06

Love it, but I live in Wales so know quite a few

Never thought it's one that would have pronunciation issues til I met one in England (she was Welsh but living in England) and lots of people pronounced it wrong but she was too polite to correct them and I think she was used to it. I think once you've told people it's easy though.

Cndbrit · 21/09/2017 12:21

I love it! We named our daughter (6 months old) Serenna so it flowed better with our last name and also more definitively feminine sounding, but we call her Seren for short. My husband is half welsh and we live in Canada now, so it's very unique here but we get compliments on the full and short form of her name all the time

Dixiestampsagain · 21/09/2017 12:35

I know plenty of Eleris, Bethans and Ffions under the age of 10, mike so definitely not just for women in their 50s!

slippermaiden · 21/09/2017 12:35

It's beautiful, I think it means "star". If I had another daughter she might be a Seren x

PandaCat · 22/09/2017 07:39

I really like Seren. I am Welsh, I live in Wales and have only ever actually met one and she was my age (in my twenties).

It does look incomplete though, I do admit.

Itsgoodforthegarden · 22/09/2017 07:44

Love it.

ILikeThatSong123 · 22/09/2017 07:48

I used to have a colleague named Seren and she was half Turkish. It is a Turkish name meaning serene. She was a funny and lovely young woman.

ILikeThatSong123 · 22/09/2017 07:49

I meant to add it's a lovely name.
