I'm aware this is quite a popular name in Wales (I'm half Welsh and was born there but we live in the north of England now) but I don't know any girls called Seren in real life. I'm not sure it'll actually work with our surname, but it's the only name my DH and I have remotely agreed on yet.

Any thoughts? If you heard this would you be like "oh god not another Seren" or think it was weird?

I know a couple and think it's a lovely name.

Donttouchthethings · 27/07/2017 23:10

I hear Serengeti. Sorry.

BrendaSmith56 · 27/07/2017 23:27

Lovely. Don't know any in the Midlands! Makes me think of Serendipity which means pleasant surprise I think?

bridgetreilly · 27/07/2017 23:52

I don't like it at all, sorry. It reminds me of Saran wrap, which is American clingfilm.

Buntysoven · 28/07/2017 00:03

I love it. Elegant and unfussy

hmcAsWas · 28/07/2017 00:11

I've not heard it before but I really like it. Makes me think of the mystical ethereal Arwen in LOTR

Decaffstilltastesweird · 28/07/2017 21:58

I like it, but I'm not mad about it. I prefer Serena, which I think is a bit more grown up sounding.

booellesmum · 28/07/2017 22:01

There is a Seren in my daughter's year.
I really like it.

SarahJonesS · 28/07/2017 22:01

As soon as I saw it I thought 'oh god' it is mentioned every. Single. Time. Someone asks for advice about welsh names.

I believe it may be top 10 in Wales when the ons stats are broken down but if you're not in Wales it's unlikely to be common

5BlueHydrangea · 28/07/2017 22:04

I really like it. Have known of it for ages but never met one.
Am now singing the Abadas song in my head though!

harleysmammy · 28/07/2017 22:08

Born and raised in Wales, 99% of my friends were called seren haha! It means star in welsh if you didn't know. I love it, even knowing so many serens, I don't think I can ever get bored of it!

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 29/07/2017 20:17

I like it but it is very popular in Wales!

Maggie2828 · 29/07/2017 20:51

I loved this name, but then heard the news report of the sarin gas attack in Syria, heard it as seren gas and went off it!

UsernameTaken2 · 29/07/2017 21:40

I like it. I've never met one before. Unusual but lovely.

AccrualIntentions · 29/07/2017 23:31

Thanks for the views, positive and negative!

MikeUniformedMike I read that thread earlier - this is about as unusual or as Welsh a name as I'd ever consider. I did want a range of views because it doesn't seem a difficult name to me but I've grown up with Welsh family and Welsh speakers (although I'm not one myself) so it feels intuitive to spell and pronounce. Perhaps I'd be dooming my child to a lifetime of correcting the spelling and pronounciation of her name. But tbh my not-particularly-unusual English name is often mispronunced and regularly misspelled, to the extent that I have a fake name for ordering taxis and pizzas, so that can happen with loads of names.

Anyway, it's still on the list for consideration Smile

My dd2 is called Seren. We live in Northumberland. No one has ever had difficulty pronouncing or spelling it.

I love the name, obviously!

Outdoorsy5644 · 01/08/2017 22:41

I love Seren.

MikeUniformMike · 21/08/2017 22:33

Hi Accrual, having got my head round it and accepting that it would be probably be pronounced as Serrun (rhymes with Derren), I heard someone say it as Suh-RUN. Yuk. Sorry.

I quite like Deryn (welsh colloquial for bird) which is pronounced Derrin. It's a bit like Celyn (Kellin) in that it should be a boy's name but works better as a girl's name.

I prefer Sophie.

Mrsknackered · 21/08/2017 22:35

I like it!

oldbirdy · 21/08/2017 22:38

It is a beautiful name but v popular round my way (left leaning middle class inner city area). There are 2 in my dd's class. And several others dotted through the school.

oldbirdy · 21/08/2017 22:39

(and we aren't in Wales!)

ChinkChink · 21/08/2017 22:40

First time I've heard of it.

I'd like it for a boy actually.

LineysRun · 21/08/2017 22:41

I very much like it.

MikeUniformMike · 22/08/2017 06:51

The (mis)pronunciation I heard was Suh-RENN not Suh-RUN.
It made made me think of 'Sir N'. I hope Seralen doesn't become a name.
It is SERR-en. I still don't like it.
