Why the fashion for stupid names.

Can someone please explain to me why on earth there is the need to saddle your poor children with a stupid name which will affect them for the rest of their life.

Is there a competition somewhere to have the most ridiculous thing that can be thought of.....why???

I think people should be concerned. Naming your child is a big responsibility and like it or not people judge people based on everything including their name. Especially if the name is 'out there' spelt wired or made up. I hate it.
Some countries make you pick off a list.

tigerdriverII · 26/07/2017 12:53

I know a Pheonix. Pronounced Phoenix. Lovely name, truly, but unfortunately misspelled.

Out there names have been around for a long time though. My uncle (b1920ish) was called Drosden. DM says rightly it sounds like "dross ". Apologies to anyone with a baby Drosden.

nut3lla · 26/07/2017 13:00

I have to say I'm loving these names! I considered Jaxon for my DS1. I really liked Troy too but stuck to a pretty traditional name after 2 weeks of him not having any name at all except 'the baby'

I've taught a Beyoncé, Pocahontas, Chanel, Jaeger, Mark Spencer, 3 Britneys all in same class Hmm, Chardonnay, Beck, several footballers full names - Henrik Larrsson and you were NOT to shorten at school! Too many other strangely spelled names to mention too, fayth, Braydyn, briyin(Brian), Jayden!

Sparrowlegs248 · 26/07/2017 13:10

I've seen Pretty Girl, skallet, chopper, Snow (surname White.....) Schmyae, (no idea, it was written down)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/07/2017 13:13

Annoying that 9 pages on OP has STILL not come back to elaborate on what she means.

MrsMeeseeks · 26/07/2017 13:22

Someone on a FB group I'm in wanted to call their baby Suicide (we talked her out of it). Most of the group members are American and the current weird baby name trend there seems to be naming your daughter after a London borough: in the last few weeks, we've had Sutton, Camden, Brixton, Harlow, Hayes and Leyton.

krakentoast · 26/07/2017 13:29

The London boroughs thing is interesting, but I guess Chelsea is an accepted name now, so it makes sense that people are looking for more inspiration.

How long before we see a baby Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest?

Bumpitup44 · 26/07/2017 13:31

Suicide?! Surely not. Why the hell would you want your beautiful baby to be linked to such a terribly sad thing? I don't think she would be allowed to register that surely?!

ijustwannadance · 26/07/2017 13:41

Jesus is a massively popular name in hispanic counties. Pronounced hey-sous?

stoplickingthetelly · 26/07/2017 13:42

Do you think this is more common in some areas than others? Both myself and dh are teachers and very rarely come across very obscure names. In fact I've been teaching 11 years now and have never taught a 'River' or such like. There are obviously some names that are less common than others, but have definitely heard them before. There are lots of the more traditional names around here.

MrsMeeseeks · 26/07/2017 14:02

Suicide?! Surely not. Why the hell would you want your beautiful baby to be linked to such a terribly sad thing?

Her reasoning was that she had been badly affected by suicide and was 'reclaiming' the word.

She could always shorten it to Sue...

Bumpitup44 · 26/07/2017 14:28

Poor baby :( the mother may feel she's reclaiming it but the child would spend her whole life being associated with tragedy

Atenco · 26/07/2017 14:43

I have a lady called Douglas Ena in the family tree, born in the late 19th century.

mamabeak · 26/07/2017 17:49

@Atenco Douglasina, Alexanderina, Alexina, Donaldina, Hectorina, are very common (at least till the generation before me: I was born in 64) in Gaelic speaking communities &/or North East Scotland fishing communities, as was the use for two first names "Donald John" "Angus Brendan" "Donald Angus" to clarify which Donald, or Angus or whatever you meant (also for girls eg Cathy Anne, Mary Anne, Maighread Mary etc) both in Gaelic and when those in the family spoke English.

LinoleumBlownapart · 26/07/2017 18:12

I know a Starr, she's 75. Starr is her middle name but she's always used it. According to her, it's Scottish, her father gave her the name (as a middle name).

Most names I'm pretty liberal about. But Suicide Shock. I think using the shortening Sue makes it even worse!

I've taught many Jesus's (hay-zus) in Hispanic countries. Also met a few Julio Cesar's.

Theymisheardme · 26/07/2017 18:58

Always amuses me when my friend texts to say "having lunch with Jesus".

Atenco · 26/07/2017 19:03

Thanks mamabeak. Douglasina may have been what they were aiming for

HoratioNightboy · 26/07/2017 19:43

It prossibly was Douglas, Atenco, as it was a unisex name for a long time before becoming just male. And Douglasina was generally pronounced eye-na, not eena.

Linoleum, I've come across this idea that Starr is a Scottish name before, but I've never found any evidence in my research to back it up. Do you know any more - is she Scottish herself, for example? Would you feel comfortable asking her?

Atenco · 26/07/2017 19:46

I never imagined that Douglas was a unisex name. Thanks for clearing that up.

creamcheeseandlox · 26/07/2017 20:00

My mum knew a peta who was a female. Never met another since.

MikeUniformMike · 26/07/2017 20:10

I've met a Peta.

GreenTulips · 26/07/2017 20:10

Peta Cavemdish is Mark Cavendish's wife (gold medal cyclist)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/07/2017 20:24

I have a relative called Peta.

Maybe all these 'odd' names in my family are the reason I don't see them as 'stupid names', unlike the OP.

I'm still waiting for her to come and give examples of the kind of stupid names she means though.

Is it anything other than Jane, Michael, Olivia and Oliver?

Is it names like Avery and Peta she finds stupid?

Is it names like Kinga and Malachi?

Is it things like Kortni and Jorja?

OP???????

SnickersWasAHorse · 26/07/2017 21:15

I've known a Peta.

What about Nigella?

TaggieRR · 26/07/2017 22:36

Poor Milf. That is horrendous.
