Can someone please explain to me why on earth there is the need to saddle your poor children with a stupid name which will affect them for the rest of their life.

Is there a competition somewhere to have the most ridiculous thing that can be thought of.....why???

KanyeWesticle -- Not spelled phonetically kind of depends whether your first language is English or not. Even though I am not a native Gael, even so Ealsaid, Iseabail, Cairaistiona, Somhairle, Ruaraidh or Tearlach make sense to me..
(Elsie/Ishbel, Christina/Sorley/Derrick{Roderick/Rory], Charles in anglecized form).

Equally names like Sholto, Murdo, Aeneas (variation/anglecization of Gaelic form of Angus/Innes),Torcuil, , Lileas, Mairsaili are all normal, or (from the Northern Isles) names like Vaila, Magnus, Erland, Ola, (and more) which some would think silly/made up but are authentic old Gaelic or Shetlandic/Orcadian names.

I once met a young boy called Geezer!!

Ginger782 · 26/07/2017 01:30

My cousin has a daughter named Ruth.

She says she can't count the number of times she's been asked "oh that's unusual, did you make that up?" and "sorry, how do you spell that? Like ROOF?"

Hmm

I once met a young boy called Geezer!!
Who loved his mum and wanted to please 'er
It was just such a shame
That he hated his name
So he pushed her into the freezer

Starr is a surname round here!

McCheese · 26/07/2017 03:27

I saw somewhere that a little girl had been called Katelyn...what is wrong with that you might ask?

It was spelled KVIIIlyn

That's correct, the Roman numeral for the number 8 replaces the letters 'ate' Confused

user1498911589 · 26/07/2017 04:02

A childhood friend of mine was called Starr, surname not first name. I think it was an anglicised polish name.

faithinthesound · 26/07/2017 04:36

This is so outing because I'm sure there can't be more than a couple in the world, but...

I know a Sparkiejane.

beautygal29 · 26/07/2017 07:39

My son has an unusual name it's common in the US but not so much here. Most people love it with only a few mean comments maybe people talk about us behind our backs I dunno and I don't really care. But I would sure as hell rather be 'bat shit crazy' than get worked up about another humans choices and cast aspersions about them based on that. It's none of my business and quite rude.

MelinaMercury · 26/07/2017 08:01

Beauty if you're referring to my earlier "bat shit" comment then wind your neck in.

I said that names don't bother me but the weird, try hard to be different excuse (rather than just saying because I liked the name) was bat shit.

SleepFreeZone · 26/07/2017 08:50

beauty is it Hunter? We have a Hunter in DS1's class and it struck me as quite American. My cousin has just named her baby Marshall and my friend has just named her baby Cooper. So I think American names are pretty popular at the moment.

RedRose2003 · 26/07/2017 09:12

Maverick and Goose?

Theymisheardme · 26/07/2017 12:02

Peyton and Avery are very American but I love them DH just looked at me weird

WhenLoveAndCakeCollide · 26/07/2017 12:18

MikeUniformMike - her name is pronounced like that, yes.

NattyBatty · 26/07/2017 12:25

I know a little boy called Milf. Not short for anything. Just Milf. I don't know if his parents were so naive they didn't know it's an acronym for something you definitely don't want your little boy to be called.

reuset · 26/07/2017 12:32

I think some people in this thread are trying to be snobby but are just showing how ignorant and anglocentric they are.

This is always the case on these threads. Also back tracking when you tell them said name isn't actually made up and 'chavvy'

Did sombody mention Sholto, yes, 'proper' name of course.

JoNapot · 26/07/2017 12:33

Steve is due a comeback.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/07/2017 12:40

Theymisheardme Avery is my octogenarian grandmother's name :)

BendydickCuminsnatch · 26/07/2017 12:40

(British through and through I mean)

ConcernedTA · 26/07/2017 12:40

Natty no way Shock

Shadow666 · 26/07/2017 12:41

There was a thread once where the OP was pregnant and the only names her OH consider were Steve, Ste, Dave, Mike, etc.

MuvaWifey77 · 26/07/2017 12:45

What stupid for some may not be for other OP . Is that simple. That's why we can only name our own children . Each to their own .

NattyBatty · 26/07/2017 12:47

ConcernedTA, yes way. He's young enough that the kids at school don't know the acronym, but I'm dreading high school on his behalf.

GreenTulips · 26/07/2017 12:48

I find the name Jesus weird - but I don't be know why - we have Noah Joseph Mark Luke etc all acceptable but not really Jesus
