Can someone please explain to me why on earth there is the need to saddle your poor children with a stupid name which will affect them for the rest of their life.

Is there a competition somewhere to have the most ridiculous thing that can be thought of.....why???

While I don't mind unusual names I do cringe at the different spellings of established names e.g. the Jorja mentioned above!

I'm wondering if the rise in unusual spellings is at all linked to the teaching of spellings by phonics. Looking through my 5 yr olds schoolwork I can just imagine her writing Georgia as Jorja, Phoebe as Feebee etc! If there is a link the number of unusual spellings will only increase as time goes on. I'll have to brace myself.

@NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown Are you kidding? No fighting at all, in fact we'll have to make sure our kids go to the same class so if anyone tries to say we're trying too hard / it's made up / not proper spelling we can just roll our eyes and explain how it's so popular, dc is Flughafen >SurnameInitial> at school

Jules2 · 25/07/2017 20:02

Hey (Auntie Stella) - what about names like 'Stupid', 'Dimwit', 'Dullard', 'Numbskull', 'Eeejit' (that's Gaelic) - names your kids can really live up to!

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 25/07/2017 20:06

@BunnyBunnyMooseMoose, I love it.
Although I'm now thinking Flughafen-Vienetta for a girl and Flughafen-Bovril for a boy, so we might not need the initials.

"I'm wondering if the rise in unusual spellings is at all linked to the teaching of spellings by phonics"

Doubt it. Phonics is the traditional way of teaching decoding/spelling (apart from a brief interlude in the late 20th century). The timelines just don't map.

Jules2 I hope that 'your' was generic, or are you saying you know my DC? Grin

user1498911589 · 25/07/2017 20:18

Was Vieneta conceived in an ice cream factory? I may never eat the stuff again

user1484615313 · 25/07/2017 20:37

One of my family members sons name is Fabio Al Capone.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 25/07/2017 20:49

We came across a little Heracles once. I was walking the dogs, Heracles' mum was walking her little boy.

Big name for a little boy.

guiltybystander · 25/07/2017 20:50

I really hate the name Rafferty. Idiotic.

dowhatyouwish · 25/07/2017 20:53

Most unique names I have heard (I work in education) are Beyonce, McFred, Thanx and Dulce. All Year 9 students.

Bumpitup44 · 25/07/2017 21:01

Rafferty is what we will be naming our second child if it's a boy🙈 I would never have thought of it as an idiotic name 😳😳

Gran22 · 25/07/2017 21:26

Jaxon, it's Jackson. Maizee, it's Maisie. And Lindsey not Linzi. Ever.

Theymisheardme · 25/07/2017 21:45

Bumpitup44 I love Rafferty

creamcheeseandlox · 25/07/2017 21:50

I know a L'ziah and a dulcie. The latter always reminds me of the shoe shop dolcies.

BunnyBunnyMooseMoose · 25/07/2017 22:01

@NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown Ooh, Flughafen-Vienetta is so very sophisticated!

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 25/07/2017 22:13

Given we've only had standardised spelling for words for a few hundred years, it's probably the case that most 'usual' names have been spelt all sorts of different ways in the past.

The only baby name I have come across recently which made me smile is John. Baby John is in my ds's gymnastics class along with Fifi, Fabien, Percy, Sebastian, Ralph etc. John really stands out!

MrsWooster · 25/07/2017 22:15

I had two Armani's in the same class a few years ago, one boy and one girl. I THINK the girl had an e on the end. Year 10, so this isnt a new fangled thing...

Consideringbeingamom · 25/07/2017 22:18

My husband met a cool and trendy young couple the other day who've named their little one Colin. Who'd have thought that??

TaggieRR · 25/07/2017 22:28

I like Rafferty!

Biscuits2or3 · 25/07/2017 22:38

Nothing wrong with an unusual name but changing the spelling of an existing name to be unique only serves to make you look uneducated.
Also I really wish people would think about what they're pairing the Christian name with if your surname is King don't call your child Joe or Lee for example and if your surnames Hoare (pronounced whore just for clarity) under no circumstances call your daughter Robin. Yes there is a poor child walking around called Robin Hoare.

Justgivemesomepeace · 25/07/2017 22:47

There is a Je-t'aime in my nieces class. I don't think many of the kids could speak French so have never batted an eyelid. My eyebrows were in my hair. My Dad's friend is Ruby middle name Slippers. Was cute maybe when she was little but she's 14 now and not amused.

Justgivemesomepeace · 25/07/2017 22:48

Dd's friend not my dads
