Can someone please explain to me why on earth there is the need to saddle your poor children with a stupid name which will affect them for the rest of their life.

Is there a competition somewhere to have the most ridiculous thing that can be thought of.....why???

@ShotsFired, oh absolutely! Grin

MaisyPops · 25/07/2017 16:50

I get the assumptions thing. I've taught a pre-teens called Gary! In my head Gary is a bloke in his 30s/40s. Same for Ian and we have had a fee of those through too recently. All lovely boys and nice named but definitely made me realise that I'd not associate a child with the names now.

Judging a person for their name is victim blaming and anyone who does it should be ashamed of themselves.

Gingernaut · 25/07/2017 17:13

There are Caci, Casey and KC where I work.

MommaGee · 25/07/2017 17:34

Reinebeau holy cow. Gutter it wasn't Phrie-z'uh though haha.

I have a friend who has a Luvleigh. It's alto to live up to!

MelinaMercury · 25/07/2017 17:42

My very good friend was all set to call her DD Heavenleigh (no hyphen either) then she gave birth and decided to go for a common but not too common name thank God!

Judging a person for their name is victim blaming

Who's the victim? Who made them the victim?

Victim assumes crime

I work in retail centred around children (think soft play centre) and i hear a lot of unusual names. The one that sticks out the most was little boy called Diesel, and on another occasion a John-Wolf

SisterMortificado · 25/07/2017 18:20

Friend's missus had their baby a little while ago. I see him on his way home from work a short while later, congratulate him and ask for name.
"Liliana," says he, and I think "that's such a beautiful name!"

Get home and he's put a thing up about how Lylliahnna is doing well.

Equally, a FOAF named their son Tobyas. Every time I see it I read it Tob-Yass.

Lovely names with stupid spellings.

Fishwiife · 25/07/2017 18:24

There are 12 registered "Snoop dogs" in the U.K. The times printed a list a few years ago...

I have a name that was not common when I was a kid, didn't meet another me until I was 16.... now it's a popular name it drives me crazy.

Celestia26 · 25/07/2017 18:27

Fishwife, I have to ask...what is your name??

donajimena · 25/07/2017 18:32

I know if two formula1 fans. Boy was Mcrae and the girl... Chicane Confused
Another name I came across his name was Tiger. But the surname that went with it which I am dying to say but would be very outing for him actually made him sound like a cartoon character. I can remember the boys grandfather saying if he (boys father) likes the name that much why doesn't he bloody change his to it?

Theymisheardme · 25/07/2017 18:32

A random guy in a coffee shop asked me DS's name and I told him. He smiled politely , said that's an interesting name etc. Then said "So when in Saviour's next operation?" I said "It's Xavier. With an X. Not Saviour". He apologized and looked rather relieved haha. Told him he was very polite considering he thought I had named my child "Saviour". He clearly hadn't wanted to upset a mom on day release with her child hehe

Jorja (which my phone changed to Norma!) seems to be a popular
chav name at the moment.

hotmama27 · 25/07/2017 18:35

I love different names I have a daughter named Starr Lillian and also a bluebell madisson. Loads of people have commented how lovely them names are. I also have an old fashioned name maggie for my youngest daughter. There is nothing wrong in giving your child a different name it's your child at the end of the day it don't matter what other people think. And I've never heard of people getting bullied because of there name.

Kaykee · 25/07/2017 18:42

In your opinion they are 'stupid'
But I'm sure the parents love their child's name. It isn't affecting you is it?

Names evolve over time these names might become more commonplace in years to come and the more common names used now might fade away. But really what someone calls their child doesn't bother me and I don't give it much thought.
My friend has unique & lovely names for her kids and they suit them to a T quite sure she doesn't care what any of you think Smile

SnickersWasAHorse · 25/07/2017 18:42

There is nothing wrong in giving your child a different name it's your child at the end of the day

See now I would argue that at the end of the day they are an adult not your child, they aren't a puppy.

Not that I am commenting on your name choice, just that people need to be aware that children are living breathing human beings who will one day become adults, not dolls.

loveslipstick · 25/07/2017 18:46

My absolute favourite name I have ever heard a child be called by across the room was Roehampton

loveslipstick · 25/07/2017 18:46

To clarify not because I like the name but because I imagine his parents drew their inspiration from the banner on a bus

user1498911589 · 25/07/2017 18:48

Starr Lillian and Bluebell Maddison will probably be commented on when teachers see the new register, at least that was my friend's experience with her Clementine Lavender (she knows I'm posting this and doesn't mind, she's reading this thread too).

Sparrowlegs248 · 25/07/2017 18:51

There's an Archimedes locally. He's 2.

outofsightoutofmind · 25/07/2017 19:23

Working in a school, I come across loads of fecking stupid erm, unusual names. How about Destiny, Atticus (now apparently gaining popularity) and - I shit ye not - Vienetta 🤣 However my all time favourite (seen on t'interweb, not at school) is Le-a.
Leah? Nooooo- Ledasha!

MommaGee · 25/07/2017 19:27

Atticus is a legit albeit less popular name. I love it

Bumpitup44 · 25/07/2017 19:28

I think now is a time where people like to be seen as different and a bit quirky and giving your child an unusual name is the popular thing to do...I love looking out for birth announcements on my Facebook and I must admit I love to see an unusual one (although they aren't always good names!) and feel a bit 'meh' when it's a really common name...that being said I think it's important to think about the longevity of a name and think of it suiting a baby, teenager and adult! We gave our daughter a traditional name with an unusual shortening as we felt this was the best of both worlds. Ultimately you can't please everyone though. I have taught some children with ridiculous names and they stick out for all the wrong reasons! I always feel sorry for the children if they are a bit shy and timid and they have a big name to live up to like Tiger,Rocky,Cowboy or Princess Buttercup (I have taught all of these)

ShotsFired · 25/07/2017 19:47

@MommaGee Atticus is a legit albeit less popular name. I love it

As with lots of big Greek or Roman type names, you do have to be a special kind of confident to think your child is going to pull it off. Any junior Atticus has very large shoes to fill and to be less than the namesake is pretty lame.

(The alternative take on the qualities of AF from Go Set A Watchman are less salubrious, though)
