Just that really.... what do you think of Tulip as a first name for a girl? Thank you :)

As pp said names are so varied nowadays that I don't think children will mock a Tulip more than a Rose or Violet.

However for me the way it sounds isn't that melliferous, and makes me think "two lips" or Tunip the Vegimal (Octonauts). Very pretty flower though.

In other languages:

Croatian: Lala
Portuguese: Tulipa (like Philippa)

Maybe those are more user friendly.
I think Tulip is nice though.

SuperBeagle · 23/07/2017 20:42

I think it's awful.

headacheschmeadache · 23/07/2017 20:43

How would you want it to be pronounced? Where I'm from, it's "choo-lip" and I've heard "too-lip" and "tyoo-lip". Are you ok with the variations and/or how it would be pronounced in your area?

sallyokkay · 23/07/2017 20:46

It sounds nice. I would think carefully about any unusual names however. Unfortunately children do get bullied.

Floellabella · 23/07/2017 20:50

I love the name Tulip. The flowers are beautiful as is the name. Honestly I don't think most people will think of the old jokes people mention, let alone kids (I've never heard of them and I'm in my 30s). There are so many other common names that can be made fun of but no one bats an eyelid (Willy anyone?). Go for it!

MrsMoastyToasty · 23/07/2017 20:53

It's not the first time I've heard the name. There's a bbc reporter by that name.

64PooLane · 23/07/2017 20:58

The BBC correspondent was the first person I thought of too. I like it.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/07/2017 21:01

No.

Sophronia · 23/07/2017 21:04

I love the flower, but the name sounds like "chew lip".

MamaHanji · 23/07/2017 21:10

Unless you are going to go and live in a self-sufficient commune and worship the weather...no

thesunwillout · 23/07/2017 21:13

Thought it said Turnip

lizzieoak · 23/07/2017 21:15

I'm not crazy about the sound. I do love Petulia though - do you like that?

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/07/2017 21:23

I like it. I'm sure there used to be a radio news reader in radio one called Tulip

eggsbenedict89 · 23/07/2017 21:26

Really pretty

ShatnersBassoon · 23/07/2017 21:31

Tulip Mazumdar is a BBC news journalist, and I always think her name doesn't fit with the serious nature of her work.

To me, it's definitely a flower, not a name. Like ranunculus.

thebigbluedustbin · 23/07/2017 21:34

What about Tulia?

IJustGotHitByADeer · 23/07/2017 21:37

Tiny Tim named his daughter Tulip (as in the song 'Tip-Toe Through The Tulips').

She goes by Victoria now.

Personally I'd love to use Tulip if I ever have a DD (Dutch connections in the family) but I don't think I'd be brave enough

OrgyofSausages · 23/07/2017 21:37

Tulisa?

chips4teaplease · 23/07/2017 21:43

What about Tulip for a girl?
Definitely better than Tulip for a boy.
Poppy, Violet... flower names are popular, so why not Tulip?

StiffyByng · 23/07/2017 21:45

Tulip Rose Read is my first thought. You may not remember her though. A woman obsessed with Mike Read the DJ. I don't think it was her name at birth.

brightlightceiling · 23/07/2017 21:46

I like it.

chocatoo · 23/07/2017 21:49

I'm not keen. Sounds quite pretty for a little girl but cant imagine it for a mature woman. If you are determined to use it, suggest you give a middle name that child can choose to use if they prefer

PotteringAlong · 23/07/2017 21:50

Not for me

Scrumptelicious · 23/07/2017 22:00

No - sorry, not a fan.
In Ireland it's slang for a foolish or inept person.
