Isadora, Vivienne and...

mammabear4 · 15/07/2017 07:46

DD1 is Isadora. We are expecting twins end of this year and we are 100% on girls names. If they are twin girls they will be called Vivienne and Josephine.

Isadora is Dora and we like Vivi and Posy as shortenings for our twin girl names.

We like having a "Sunday best" name as it were, I prefer shorter more cutesy nicknames as children but would like them to have a "proper" name as they get older so would like that same theme to continue in our boys names.

Problem is I don't like ANY boys names but have convinced myself it is a boy and a girl from the 12 week scan - we won't find out at the 20 week scan. Struggling because we want a solid, traditional name that isn't too "out there" but not one that's extremely popular.

Any suggestions??

Our rather mixed bag of "like but not love"

Albert - Bertie
Douglas - Dougie
George - Georgie
Ambrose - Bram

Thank you :)

Vivien can also work as a boys name if you're really set on it btw

BewareOfTheToddler · 15/07/2017 14:31

How about:

Gilbert - Gil/Bertie
Timothy - Tim/Timmy
Fabian - ?
Lucas - Luke
Edmund/Edwin/Edward - Teddy
Zachary - Zac

I love Nathaniel/Nate!

I also know an Orlando who goes by Roly, which I think is quite cute.

Oscar is very popular in my neck of the woods (London).

mammabear4 · 15/07/2017 14:32

Ok current list DH and I agree on and definitely need to think over more:
George, Hugo, Oscar (too popular?)
Douglas - Dougie (love this but not sure it "goes" with other names?)
Albert - Albie/Bertie (DH reluctant)
Ambrose - Bram (possibly too "out there" DH not keen on the "Rose" part)
Montgomery - Monty (love but too posh/too much of a mouthful?)
Samson - Sonny??? Not too keen on any nickname, don't like the potential of Sam
Laurence - Laurie (love but Lawrence my sister's married surname, bit strange perhaps)
Casper - Cas (not 100%, DH says ghost)
Barnaby - Barney
Vincent - Vinnie
Angus - Gus ... last 3 DH says no I'm keeping them and hoping at least one will grow on him!

Ladies you've all been great and given me some fabulous options, I started with a few shaky options and now have lots to mull over so thank you.

Please keep suggestions coming!

Lila I quite like the Gus nickname but Augustus I'm not keen on - plus DD1 is an August baby while the twins are due December so might be a bit odd! Thank you for some different suggestions but none jumping out at me.
Not keen on Vivien for a boy at all I'm afraid.

Beware I'm in Yorkshire and Oscar hasn't quite infiltrated here yet. That's DH's favourite I think but not keen on Oz or Ozzie variations (I'm being nit picky I know)

Argh Edward you've hit a sore point there - I bloody love Edward and the potential nn Teddy but a close friend has an Edward and my sister although doesn't have any children yet has claimed Edward for her own as I "cant use it anyway" due to my friends DS. One of my life's greatest losses!!

I have no boys suggestions as I'm rubbish with boys names but I love your girl names.

I also have a Dora (Not isadora but she does have a longer name) and Vivienne NN Vivi is on our list if this ones another girl Smile

Joinourclub · 15/07/2017 14:59

Isaac - Zac
Nathanial - Nat
Sebastian - Seb
Benedict - Ned - Ben

LilaBard · 15/07/2017 15:01

No prob OP as I say not my tastes but nice to see someone going for something a bit different.
How about Arthur nn Art or if you like Edward but can't use it something like Edwin nn Ned?

mammabear4 · 15/07/2017 15:02

Sally you have great taste :) I love my little Dora she suits the name to a tee and I don't know any others.

If you had a boy next is there anything you would start with as a potential or are you as much at a loss as I am? Any boy names you like from the suggestions given previously in the thread?

Seeing as we obviously love the same names would love your opinion!

So annoying, Mammabear4! I have the same problem with Elspeth, which I would love for a girl but one of our friends has used it. That in itself wouldn't stop me but our sons have the same (pretty popular) first name so it would be too much, especially given it's not very common.

mammabear4 · 15/07/2017 15:04

Join ooh Benedict I love! I'm just worried about the potential of Ben as a nickname, I really don't like that name on its own.

Lila do love Arthur/Art/Artie but a close friend just had an Arthur in May. Edwin would seem like too much of a second best to Edward I think!

Beware I know!! I've tentatively added Edward to my list but will absolutely incur the wrath of my sister if I were to use it even though she might never actually have a boy anyway

Slightly OT, but how on earth do you get "Posy" from Josephine?

BewareOfTheToddler · 15/07/2017 15:15

Oh, and how about Julian/Jules?

StarCrossdSkys · 15/07/2017 15:20

Douglas definitely goes with Vivienne and Isadora. They all have an inter-war, Agatha Christie feel. She used some really cool names in her books.

mammabear4 · 15/07/2017 15:23

Hillary see attached screenshot - I was under the impression Posy was known as the classic nickname for Josephine but maybe it's not as we'll known? It was the name of my great great grandmother :)

Beware I'm not keen on Julian - there was a very strange Julian in my year at school. Also my MIL is Julie!

StarCrossd thank you so much for that, Douglas has just soared to the top of my list 😄

Oops forgot to attach - Posy or Posey I believe is a more common spelling

Ahh thank you so much ladies, some absolutely fab suggestions.

Names that have jumped out at me: Miles, Emerson (my great grandmother's maiden name!) and Lysander (although I know DH will unfortunately say no to that one)

Kind of like Rohan but in my accent it doesn't sound as nice.

Cassius and Finnian - just love the way those names sound but not sure I'm brave enough to use either! Cute nicknames though - will see what DH thinks :)
