Evamarie or Aisling?

Currently pregnant with baba number 2 and me and DH are are currently sifting through baby names. We have a 1 year old Leo, and we're only 5 weeks pregnant so still early days before we know the sex but if it's a boy we've settled on Sam, just need a girls name now! It's between Evamarie (one name) and Aisling, pronounced Ash-ling (DH is Irish). Really like both names but can't choose so some opinions could really help if possible. Brianne/Brianna isn't out of the mix either. Thank you xx

Aisling!

I lived in Ireland for a while and knew several, all pronounced Ash-ling

Decaffstilltastesweird · 07/07/2017 14:14

Good point agent!

I'm Irish and love Irish names but just can't convince my English DH! Would love a little Ailis/h or Aisling though. You'll just have to use one of them for me op Wink!

@AgentCooper haha that made me giggle! Maybe the Irish can claim it lol xx

Aisling. I really like it - I have a cousin called it and she's completely unbothered by those who call her Ays-ling.

Evamarie isn't very nice or even really a name

queenofthedump · 07/07/2017 14:45

Not keen on either but anything is better than 'baba'...

27Harper · 07/07/2017 14:50

@Mrsknackered well I feel that was uncalled for...

@queenofthedump just another word for baby xx

Aisling is pronounced ash-ling, there's another name called Aislinn pronounced Ash-Linn. I've never heard of ash-leen but it may partly be accent? Different vowel sounds are pronounced differently in different parts of the country.

TerfwithaNerf · 07/07/2017 15:08

I grew up with quite a few Aislings (in N.I. where it's most definitely pronounced Ashleen) and tbh find it nice but a bit boring, same as Niamh, Maeve, Aoife etc.

That said, Evamarie and it's spelling are awful so Aisling wins by default.

springbreeze · 07/07/2017 15:10

The Aisling in Maeve Binchy's 'Light a Penny Candle' says that its pronounced Ash-leen and you don't get a better source than that!

I think Aisling and Leo work really well together.

27Harper · 07/07/2017 15:16

The pronunciation is originally ASH ling but other pronunciations do exist and are not incorrect, like ayz-ling, ash leen at, so you're technically all correct. I would pronounce it ASH ling however in my case xx

*etc

OP posts:
badtime · 07/07/2017 19:40

It is pronounced Ash-leen in the northern counties of Ireland as 'ing' is usually pronounced like 'een' there, even in English i.e. people would pronounce walking as walk-een, running as run-een etc., and although sing and ring are not pronounced seen and reen, singing and ringing would be sing-een and ring-een.

Obviously, this doesn't apply to all northern accents, but it explains how people can simultaneously pronounce Aisling as both Ash-ling and Ash-leen.

However, ayz-ling is wrong. I've only ever heard of Americans using it though, and they tent not to give a shit.

badtime · 07/07/2017 19:41

*tend not to

27Harper · 07/07/2017 20:41

@badtime thanks for the clarification lol xx

I know an Aisling and Ashling, both pronounced Ash-ling (and both of them Irish).

Definitely prefer Aisling (although I like Eva and Marie, just not both together).

teaandakitkat · 07/07/2017 20:50

My pal Aisling is pronounced Ash-lin. She's Welsh!
I like Eva-Marie with a hyphen but I'm not so keen on it as one name.

Laladog · 07/07/2017 20:50

Aisling is beautiful, although maybe some people should calm down about the spelling of Evamarie, it's just a spelling calm the fuck down, it's her baby, her choice. Evamarie is a lively name as well.

Aisling Eilidh is a gorgeous combination. And it is ash-ling. I would personally go with that one. Also depends on your surname a bit I suppose? Don't have to divulge if you don't want to but it might help people give you an opinion on which flows better. Congrats to you and hubby and Leo

27Harper · 07/07/2017 20:53

@laladog thanks hun. Surname would be Conan btw xx

OP posts:
Jamhandprints · 07/07/2017 20:57

I like Ash-ling but I've only heard it pronounced Ash-leen too, which I don't like. Eva is nice too.

Laladog · 07/07/2017 20:57

If you name her Aisling Eilidh Conan, I don't think there will be any doubt she's Irish. Beautiful name

Laladog · 07/07/2017 21:01

It can be pronounced Ash ling or ash leen, but in Ireland I've only heard it pronounced Ash ling. Both ways are correct though

ButterflyFree · 07/07/2017 21:15

I have Aisling (pronounced Ash-ling) as a middle name, and was always having to correct it from being pronounced 'Ayez-ling' since childhood. Then I moved to the Middle East and it got even worse - all my official ID and documentation has it written as 'Ay-sah-linj' in Arabic 😩😂

It is a lovely name, but it might get annoying to constantly have to correct other people's pronunciations and spellings of it though.
