Not so common a name I think.

That's even worse in my opinion. I'd go with Sebastian if I were you.

PattyPenguin · 04/07/2017 07:39

As is often pointed out, if you give a child the full form of a name, it's easier for him/her to choose a different diminutive if he/she doesn't like the one the parents use. Register him as Sebastian, call him Bastian if you want, he can always go for Seb when he's older.

It's the kid who has to live with the name, not the parents.

Bastion was the main British base in Iraq.

I think that association needs to fade a bit further before the name becomes useable.

Arch I know a German Bastian who definitely has that on his birth certificate - his mother endlessly corrects people and is very arsey about it. He's 6. The rules are a bit more relaxed these days and you can use a name if you can prove a precident, though I know of Americans who have registered unusual names here and been told to come back with evidence of the name in use (in published print) and then told the child will be constantly explaining/ spelling their name but allowed to go ahead with registering it.

Sophronia · 04/07/2017 09:43

I'd spell it Bastian

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 04/07/2017 09:46

When in my teens I had a friend who's brother was Bastie - short for Sebastian. He was known by everyone apart from his friends as "Bastie the Bastard". He was actually a very sweet little boy if I remember correctly.

Please don't do it OP

Awful

user1487175389 · 04/07/2017 09:56

Isn't there a Camp Bastion? Not sure what it is, if it's even a thing.

Only1scoop · 04/07/2017 09:57

Also hate it now that Sebastian had reached the masses. 'Se bash chin" has become a holler in supermarkets.
Grim

Mrsknackered · 04/07/2017 09:58

I think it the crap part of Sebastian.
I'm a massive hater of Sebastian though.

becotide · 04/07/2017 10:00

dreadful

AssassinatedBeauty · 04/07/2017 10:09

Camp Bastion was the main British Army base in Afghanistan, not Iraq.

ElusiveDuck · 04/07/2017 13:54

Bastien is one of my favourite boy names, not short for Sebastian. I first heard it from Never Ending Story where the kid was Bastian Balthazar Bucks/x (Not sure on spellings).

Littleraincloud · 04/07/2017 13:57

He will get called bastard I'm afraid, although I like the name personally! I have a Sebastian and I love it

ShowMeWhatYouGot · 04/07/2017 14:02

I like the name personally.

But he will get bullied as there's a very popular game with a hated robot with said name

grufallosfriend · 04/07/2017 14:22

Awful in an English speaking country! Bastian, Basty etc are way too similar to bastard!

Morecoffeeurgently · 04/07/2017 15:19

Immediately I think of Camp Bastian. Much prefer Sebastian.

Topseyt · 04/07/2017 15:28

Awful. Really.

It would make me think of Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

I quite like Sebastian.

greendale17 · 04/07/2017 15:41

I would think it was a shortened version of Sebastian

Archfarchnad · 04/07/2017 15:49

That's interesting, drinking, perhaps things have changed in the last few years - but I think it's also hugely dependent on the Standesbeamte on the day. My youngest is now 15, so it was a while ago for us, but we made sure we took written proof along when registering our Dds with Irish middle names. Soon afterwards we met a (German) family who'd tried to give their own DD the same Irish name, but as a first name, and been denied permission.
I also know someone who tried to call her son Max Philipp and the Standesbeamte thought that sounded rubbish and registered the kid as Philipp Max instead! Shock
But it says a lot if the woman you know constantly has to correct people who think the name is Sebastian - what a drag for her son.
