Thoughts on this name? DC1 (a boy) due in October and DH and I have had quite a struggle finding names we both like.

Something about the name Alfred appeals to me (the 'grandpa name' factor, plus something quite romantic, a la King Alfred, Tennyson etc).

I am not a fan of the nickname Alfie (although would probably like it more if if wasn't so popular, if that makes sense) but don't completely hate it so if DS ended up being called that by friends I could probably cope!

Another contender is Rowan, but I've just found out that my Mum's horrible, unsupportive line manager at work has that name (and is a woman) which puts me off a bit. Also know a couple of baby Rowans already, and wonder if their parents would be a bit miffed.

This is tricky - feels such a big decision! Does it all become clear when baby arrives??

Thoughts welcome!

I do like Alfred but as I am a huge Batman fan I instantly think of the ever so reliable butler but that might be just me Blush

Love Alfred. You might also like Wilfred and Albert

I like Alfred. I know one who goes by Fred or Freddie and never gets Alfie as far as I know

I don't mind Alfred, but I really don't like Alfie so that would put me off.

I prefer Alfred to Rowan.

I quite like Alfred but not Alfie at all. Prefer Fred or Freddie as a nn. Really like Rowan. Also love Arthur which has a similar feel to Alfred.

Sophronia · 29/06/2017 13:42

I like Alfred a lot. I only like Rowan on a girl.

Thanks, all! Really helpful to hear your thoughts.

susie I love Arthur too - a great name - I have a close family member called Arthur (who is lovely, too) otherwise I think it'd be top of my list!

lilmy3 thanks for the suggestions - not so keen on Wilfred but Albert is v sweet - I like it.

snoopypoodle I didn't make the Batman connection! DH is also a big fan so perhaps that's one of the reasons he likes it so much...!

And also jooni reassuring to hear you know an Alfred who doesn't automatically become Alfie! Though it is a cute name Smile
