Hi,

I absolutely love the name Violet, but mine and my husbands surname begins with D

I personally don't think it is that big of a deal, since STI is the term that's used in schools these days and she would have a middle name (Violet Faye), so her initials would be VFD.

Do you think I can get away with these initials, or do you think it needs to be vetoed. There are no other girls names we like

By the way, we don't know the gender, so I could be stressing over nothing if baby is a boy.

The initials VD still mean venereal disease to me, but I'm 40. I doubt many young people would make that connection.

I don't think kids nowadays would pick up on that, it's not a term that I was aware of until I heard it on Friends and I'm 36!

Depends if they're still showing the wartime posters about vd in lessons. They were when I was at school and am in my early thirties now.

Don't do it. I speak from personal experience.

My initials are SM, luckily not such a known thing in my youth, and before 50 shades main steamed it.
But anyone old enough to not use sti will also be old enough not to tease her.

Hmm I don't think I would go there. Although it may be an old term that isn't used any more by younger people.

The younger generation will only know it as STI, only us oldies know what VD is. Violet is a beautiful name

My dsil was VD before marrying my brother so I asked her. She said she never had a problem and she's 34

I really would not worry about it.

They might learn about venereal disease in a history lesson one day, and she might - might! - get a bit of ribbing for 5 minutes, but that would be it.

My initials are VD after getting married (just over a year ago) and I've had one comment and that only came about because they call a guy on my team at work PB (his initials) and then they clicked mine was VD. Was a 10 second joke and never been mentioned since. I'm 26 and don't really know anything about VD, think I saw it mentioned on telly once, so anyone younger than me is unlikely too!

Actually VD is very much on the up particularly in London and Manchester so I really wouldn't choose those initials!

I'm in my thirties and wouldn't think twice about it - only makes me think of Joey on Friends! There's a lot worse initial combos out there and I don't think kids would make any connection.

I know a teenager with these initials. Doesn't get teased at school as vd is old school. Go for it

Kids know what VD is. They cover the tudors in history!

VFD reminds me of the Lemony Snicket books and the fact that her name is Violet ( main character) is very entertaining and I love it x

Violet Faye is gorgeous. I wouldn't connect the initials, and I highly doubt that kids would.

Thanks all. I do still love the name and a lot of you have reaffirmed my belief that it is an old fashioned term. Plus, the initials BO never did Obama any harm! Baby still might not be a girl, so we will just have to see

It's a non issue. I'm 28, went to school with a girl with the initials V.D.

Nobody picked up on it, not once, venereal disease wasn't a commonly used term 10-16 yeas ago, it absolutely is not now.

Friends is the only place I've ever heard it, I wouldn't worry
