Narrow down names

Missyb15 · 22/06/2017 16:18

Firstly do you think it's important that sibling names 'go' with each other? My oh chose our dd's name as much as I like it, my tastes are quite different.

Second, which of these is your favourite? I am struggling narrowing down our list as my favourite changes almost daily. The names shortlisted are

Greta (oh really dislikes this one :( ... )
Matilda
Beatrice
Tabitha (Oh dislikes this too unfortunately)
Florence
Erica

Thanks

I don't think sibling names need to 'go' with each other.

My favourites on your list are Matilda (nickname Tilly) and Tabitha (but I guess you can't choose that one if OH really dislikes it).

Amee1992x · 22/06/2017 16:21

Erica
Florence
Beatrice
Greta
Matilda
Tabitha reminds me of a cat 🤷🏻‍♀️

disneykid · 22/06/2017 16:22

I'd probably pick Florence from that list although I don't really like any of them.

Surely it's you're choice this time anyway so just pick your favourite.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 22/06/2017 16:23

Beatrice

numbmum83 · 22/06/2017 16:23

Florence , Beatrice or Matilda.

Matilda is my favourite

Tabitha is our cat.

Missyb15 · 22/06/2017 16:26

I should probably not include Greta and Tabitha on the list as oh passionately hates them lol but any suggestions of other 'old lady' names are welcome seeing as that seems to be my taste

TempsPerdu · 22/06/2017 16:29

My favourites are the two your OH dislikes - I'm currently pregnant with a girl and Greta and Tabitha are both on my list. Otherwise the only one I really dislike is Erica, although I'd probably avoid Florence and Matilda too just as they're so popular right now.

Missyb15 · 22/06/2017 16:33

Yeah from coming on here I notice Florence and Matilda pops up a lot on the names board, although I have yet to meet a child with either of those names. Maybe they're less popular down south

There are sooooo many Florences where I live (Home Counties). They're everywhere. Matilda, not so much; I think I know two.

Lovegaultier · 22/06/2017 16:55

Like all your names. Never met a Matilda in real life (teacher too) and really like it.

LadyGagarden · 22/06/2017 17:09

I only like Matilda from your list but your list is v similar to my sister in law's and she had Lilith on there which can be shortened to Lily which your oh might like? Her oh had different tastes but both liked Pippa. She had a boy in the end Grin

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 22/06/2017 17:24

No Missy, names don't have to go together.
I ❤️ Greta and Tabitha, the names your DH hates 😂, so I'll have to say Matilda, which I also like.
Suggestions;
Harriet
Jemima
Miriam
Susannah
Maude

AdaColeman · 22/06/2017 17:36

Florence is my favourite from your list.

Least favourites are Greta amd Erica.

Matilda Beatrice and Tabitha are already very popular.

Other "old lady " names I like are Maud Constance Dulcie Drucilla Clarissa.

harderandharder2breathe · 22/06/2017 17:42

I think it's nice when siblings names go together without being too matchey

However, they will be known as a sibling set really only as children, so they'll be Sibling A and Sibling B for a comparatively short time, once they're adults they'll mostly be individuals. So it's more important to choose names you love than names that go together

I really like Matilda, Tabitha and Beatrice

Sophronia · 22/06/2017 20:32

I like all of those names, especially Greta and Tabitha!

thanks all. im going to add Marianne and Iris to the list- which hasn't helped me narrow it down any further but good to see some more suggestions!

disneykid · 22/06/2017 21:46

Iris is nice xx

24hoursinER · 22/06/2017 21:49

I love Matilda (Tilly, Tilda, Milly, Matty, Maude... the possibilities are many), Florence, Beatrice and Tabitha. They were all on my list. I also liked Theodora, Eliza, Isadora, Isolde and Alexandra.

CTSC7778 · 22/06/2017 22:52

Greta - really cute but makes me think German (Hansell and Gretal maybe ? )
Matilda - cute
Beatrice - honestly just makes me thing of beetroot and rice mixed together for some reason - perfectly normal name though I accept
Tabitha - nice but a bit feline
Florence - lovely , I know a little one nn Flossie
Erica - ehhhh it's okay

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 23/06/2017 09:53

❤️ Marianne, very pretty.

blahthisistoohard · 23/06/2017 10:03

I actually disagree with what people say and think sibling names really should go together. It will be X and X for a number of years and you'll frequently say them together even after they have grown up and left home. When someone announces a new baby and it doesn't reflect well with the first child I always think it's such a shame.

That said- of your names I like Florence and Matilda, don't like Erica and I also don't think that is an old persons name!

If you like old lady names how about;
Ivy
Edith (Edie)
Ava
Millie
Lily
Elsie

Others;
Thea
Elodie
Polly
Mollie
Fleur

Missyb15 · 23/06/2017 16:39

I get your point blahthisistoohard, it would be nice if the names went together. Our dd is Faye, so it's not quite in the same genre as 'old lady' but I think it would go with names like Iris, Ivy, Beatrice, Florence (though maybe too many f's?). Any other suggestions of vintagey names that go with Faye will be appreciated. I love Matilda and it's my favourite name so far but it doesn't quite go with Faye. Haven't decided yet whether that matters to me or not

CTSC7778 Greta is of german origin I think
