Benjamin (Benji) or Albert (Albie)

We have 4 weeks until our baby boy arrives.

I love Albie but am worried it works for a baby or an old man but not really inbetween.

Benjamin is the only other name we have agreed on. I like it but I don't love it. I prefer the nn Benji to Ben. Will people still use Ben?

Which name do people prefer?

I like both names. Albert is more in the "old fashioned name" trend whereas Benjamin is - to me at least - more timeless.

I suspect when he's a teenager or adult he would choose to be known as Al or Ben though I have known an adult Benji

This generation of babies is full of children who will grow up to adults called Alfie, Archie etc so I wouldn't be too worried. To us Albie is a baby or old man name but it'll be normal to his generation. He could also chose to go by Al or Bert or just Albert when he's older if he doesn't want to be a teen/young man called Albie

Having said that, my personal choice would be Benjanin, Benji when he's little then Ben when he's a bit older

Albert

(But I hate Albie)

I know a Benjamin who has Benj as a nickname. He's definitely not a Ben or Benji.

I would choose Benjamin but I don't think you get to decide what the nickname will be. That's between him and his mates.

If you went with Benjamin, could you live with Ben as a NN? What if he prefers Bert to Albie?

I really don't like Albert or Albie, so I'd go with Benjamin. I'm sure people will call him Ben (he might even choose to cal himself that when he gets older, as it seems a bit more mature than Benji), but does it matter what other people call him? You can still call him Benji.

My whole immediate and extended family call me by the full version of my first name, because that's what my parents have ALWAYS called me, while everyone else in my life shortens it. And I introduce myself to new people as the short version. Do my family care? No. They rarely talk to my friends and colleagues about me, after all.
