Hypothetical question

Full disclosure, I am not pregnant and do not expect to be any time soon. However, I have come across a name in a book that I REALLY like, and I was curious about how people would feel about it if it were an actual child's name.

The book is The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay, and the name is Peekay.

I'm not sure why, but it just has a very pleasing sound to my ear. What say you, MN collective?

Yikes!! Really not keen! Sorry! Boy or girl? It sounds like a dish you'd be served up in Singapore or something!

Patienceisvirtuous · 18/06/2017 06:14

Peekay boo! 😄

Or what about Peter Kay? 😬

YoureNotASausage · 18/06/2017 06:24

What about 'PK', like 'PJ' or whatever. Full name Patrick Kevin or something.

Peekay would have a lifetime of Pee jokes.

SuperBeagle · 18/06/2017 06:59

Sounds like PK, like someone's name is Peter Kenneth and everyone calls him PK.

It's awful.

I don't like those AJ/PJ/PK/LJ type names anyway because they strike me as very American, but Peekay is truly grim.

From the book's Wikipedia page:

'The author identifies "Peekay" as a reference to his earlier nickname "Pisskop": Afrikaans for "'Pisshead''

Yeah, I really wouldn't.

I know, I've read the book. But while Pisskop was the horrible name given to him by the Judge, Peekay was the name given to him by the first kindly person he met after doing to boarding school the first time, the fellow who sold him his first pair of shoes.

The fact that Peekay then chooses to go by Peekay for the entirety of the rest of the book - not just go by it but ONLY go by it, single name Peekay no surname like Madonna - feels to me like he's taking back his identity? Yes, it's a reminder of his past, but it's also a reminder of how he survived it and came out the other side better. If it was painful for him, he would have dropped it at the first opportunity, surely?

Regardless, like I said, this is all hypothetical. I'm not pregnant, so there is no impending child! I just wondered what people would think. I really like the way it sounds, but it IS one of my favorite books, so it has that association for me.

My sister dated a Japanese airline pilot called Peekay, not sure of the correct spelling, he was an absolute gent.😄

I'm glad you're not having a child op

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/06/2017 20:47

Awful

Floggingmolly · 18/06/2017 20:52

What do you like about it? Genuine question...

It reminds me of the story (urban myth? although I've read it about it on here) of the mum who called her son Guy, thinking it was pronounced Gooey.
My only thought was; even if you did make a genuine mistake like that, why the hell would you want to call your child Gooey? Confused

BewareOfTheToddler · 18/06/2017 21:01

Floggingmolly, you've just made me snigger so hard my sleeping toddler (on lap) just woke Grin. Maybe your friends were fans of the
puddings?

Bringmewineandcake · 18/06/2017 21:06

Patience Grin
OP....no!!

villainousbroodmare · 18/06/2017 21:07

I was about to say Piss Kop! (I also really liked the book though.) What about Gideon after Gideon Mandoma? Or Philip Kieran and use the initials?

Hothothotsummer · 18/06/2017 21:13

PK nuts!

faithinthesound · 19/06/2017 06:39

I'm glad you're not having a child op

Well ouch, lol.

What do I like about it? As I've said, it just has a pleasing sound to me. If I'm honest, even if I were having a child, I probably wouldn't use it. I've taught. I've seen some names. I wouldn't give a name to a child of mine.

But I think it sounds nice, that's all!
