We absolutely love a name that's seen as 'chavvy' would it be wrong of us to 'saddle' our child with it?

....and we have a friend (45) who is Haydn (he's a kiwi).

RemyTheHamster · 17/06/2017 21:59

@BuzzKillington of course there are people with those as first names. However, Haydn is definitely normally the surname version and pronounced differently.

Aiden is an alternative spelling.

I've always thought of Hayden as a posh name. I think there is a shift against it because it rhymes with Jayden.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 17/06/2017 22:01

Hayden is fine. There were two born in my wider friendship group around the time DS1 was born 20 years ago and people used to comment on it being "posh" 😁.

I do think it's lumped in a bit with Jayden/Kayden/Aiden nowadays which probably are a bit "chavvy".

At the end of the day though it doesn't matter what other people think - if you & DP like the name then you should use it.

DumbledoresApprentice · 17/06/2017 22:01

Makes me think of Hayden White, postmodernist literary critic and philosopher of history. I don't associate it with "chavvy" at all.

AssassinatedBeauty · 17/06/2017 22:02

To me, Hayden is a Welsh name, and not chavvy. I think people are put off because it sounds like one of the Jayden, Caiden, Aidan type names which are new-ish and/or popular.

I wouldn't think anything negative about the name Hayden. If you like it then go for it, don't worry about what people now might think about it.

troodiedoo · 17/06/2017 22:04

As others have said, it gets unfairly lumped with jaiden and caiden. I would say it's a proper name. Can you give us any clues on your surname?

donajimena · 17/06/2017 22:04

I knew a few Haydns growing up. It was always pronounced as Hayden is today. I've never seen it as a surname.
I like Haydn. Hayden much less so. But then I can't stand Jayden, Kayden etc..

ChippyMinton · 17/06/2017 22:06

Aidan is neither new nor chavvy Hmm

Jayden, Kayden etc on the other hand...

Decaffstilltastesweird · 17/06/2017 22:06

I like it!

Agree with pps that some people dislike Kayden and Jayden on here and just group Hayden together with them.

I hate it when people call names chavvy. It's an odious word and lazy thinking to boot.

MaisyPops · 17/06/2017 22:07

Personally I don't like hayden as a name. That's personal preference more than anything.

I do think socially it's been lumped in with the Jaden, Caiden, braden etc.

ToodlePipsqueak · 17/06/2017 22:08

I think it's a nice name. I am from a 'chavvy', 'underclass' area and have never met a Hayden actually (I have met one actually but he was from a posher area and it was actually his nickname not his real name). I've never understood why mumsnet don't like it.

SoupDragon · 17/06/2017 22:08

AssassinatedBeauty' I am laughing at you defending Hayden as a Welsh name whilst lumping the Irish name Aidan in with the "Jaiden/Caiden" ones :o

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/06/2017 22:08

Hayden is a lovely name and imo doesn't deserve the hate it gets on here. One of my close relatives is a Hayden and he's kind, clever and endlessly witty, so I am a bit biased Grin

RemyTheHamster · 17/06/2017 22:08

Does 'chavvy' mean someone on benefits? Confused I'm honestly struggling to understand!

Surname is Meadows.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/06/2017 22:10

Also, if it makes any difference at all, my Hayden is rather the opposite of chavvy!

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/06/2017 22:11

ah. To my ear Hayden meadows doesn't go. It sounds like a farm name, sorry!! It's the hay and meadow connection!

AguacateMaduro · 17/06/2017 22:11

Yes, Aidan is Irish, but the others were borne out of an American taste for a name that sounded like Aidan but wasn't Aidan. Confused

RemyTheHamster · 17/06/2017 22:12

Not too fussed on them not going. I don't think anyone is really going to piece together his name and think farm! I've met Stephen Stephensons, Tommy Thompsons, etc. and they're worse than Hayden Meadows!

PortiaCastis · 17/06/2017 22:14

Very interesting article about the vile word chav

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/06/2017 22:14

I literally just did but okay 😂 I just thought that you adding your surname to the mix was somehow relevant, my mistake!

Decaffstilltastesweird · 17/06/2017 22:14

Hmmm I do like Hayden but I'm not sure about Hayden Meadows (sorry). It sounds like hay-in-meadows.

I like Aidan too, if that's an alternative.

RemyTheHamster · 17/06/2017 22:15

Not looking for opinions on our surname 🙄 someone asked.

But people on mumsnet think of very minor issues. Like how well a middle name flows, etc.

OP posts:
EverythingEverywhere1234 · 17/06/2017 22:17

I don't quite know why you're being so snarky, no one has given an opinion on your surname itself Confused why ask if you don't want answers?

RemyTheHamster · 17/06/2017 22:17

To be honest, if it's not Hayden, it was going to be Jayden GrinGrin I've never seen anyone post about it so didn't know that was hated even more, but if Hay is such an issue, Jayden Meadows takes that away. Never liked Kayden though but for no reason really.
