We are expecting our first child (a girl) in the summer and are having a real debate as most of the names we like appear in top 10 lists, looking at the stats they account for c

Rose and Grace seem to be very popular middle names. Mae is often the second half of a hyphenated first name e.g. Lily-Mae.
Sophia is very popular, but if it's the name you both like best no reason you shouldn't use it.

I have 2 children. One has a more 'unusual' name and there are 2 in his class. The other has a top 5 name and I've yet to meet another one of the same age. There are big differences in regions too so a name might be very popular in Liverpool but barely used in Brighton. Just go with what you love!

It very much depends on where you are. I am a teacher and don't know any Sophia's, taught one sienna four years ago and taught an Imogen last year. None of your names are overused here.
I picked what I thought was an unusual name. Dd is 8months and her name is tipped to be one of the most popular for next year. You never can tell.
Go with the name that you love.

There are hundreds of names that you won't have thought of, and I don't mean particularly obscure ones. I'd be looking outside the top 100 names from the last few years.

SaS2014 · 17/06/2017 15:34

I always swore I'd not chose a 'popular' name. Can't really justify why in any sensible way, other than I always worried popular was another way of saying common and apparently I'm a bit if a snob lol.
Well that whole thinking has gone out the window now I'm expecting DD1. Husband is stubborn git who (very unseasonably) refused to give in to my choices as he wasn't a fan of any. And he has awful taste so we ruled out some of hisWink.
Weeks of talking have led to a name we both love but which turns out to be very popular. Decided only thing that actually matters is we love the name.

Of your choices I love Sophia Grace.

Good luck with rest of pregnancy x

Sienna Rose is beautiful.

friedegs · 17/06/2017 18:16

All three are very popular but pretty so just go with your favourite.

Sophie Maria
Sienna Marie
Imogen Alice

Sophia is very popular, and rose, mae and grace I think are very popular for middle names like Louise was in the 80s! Sienna Elizabeth would be my choice from your list, very pretty but also classic x

I've 3 daughters - all 3 of their names are top ten names. I think one of their names isn't top ten UK wise but is very popular where I live. It doesn't bother me, so far my kids haven't expressed an opinion either way about their name Grin. Their names are very popular but each of them has been the only one in their class and two have been the only one in that school year. I've 2 at primary and one in secondary. I mean you could pick a less popular name, and someone else could have exactly the same idea and they could end up in the same school year. I know two sets of children, each of them has a fairly unusual Irish name - they ended up in the same school year - there were daggers on enrolment day Grin.
From your list I like Sophia Elizabeth (I prefer Sophia spelt Sofia but that's just a personal preference)

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 17/06/2017 20:36

Honestly, though the names may be popular, there will only be one in your house. If you love it, use it. Especially if it sounds beautiful.

From your list, I think Sienna Rose or Grace sounds so pretty.

Good luck!

Thank you all for your comments - really helpful and have made me feel lot better about the name choice and to just go with our favourite!

Popularity varies by region too. One of your names is the name of my DD and she is the only one I know. Also when she was born and we were seeing the HV she commented that she hadn't come across the name in a while.

Just go with your favourite.

DramaAlpaca · 17/06/2017 21:08

Another vote for just going for your favourite. Sophia Rose would be my choice, it's lovely.
