How would you pronounce Bleu?

Ok, friend of a friend had a little boy a few days ago and announced name of fb. I ended up seeing the announcement because friend of a friend commented on it.

They've named their baby Bleu. Am I going mad? That's pronounced like Bl-er isn't it? Like Corden Bleu?

All comments are saying how lovely it is and how he is their 'little boy blue.'

I didn't say anything and then our my friend mentioned that her friend had had a little boy and named him Blue. I said "oh like the colour?" and she said "yes, but they've spelt it the french way, think it's Bleu"

I said that Bleu isn't pronounced Blue but Bl-er and she looked at me like this --> Hmm

Isn't this baby going to go through life with 'Bl-er' as a name or have I got it really wrong? Blush

AndNoneForGretchenWieners, that made me laugh.

I am putting my money on Bunni-Bleu.

I once met a boy called Maison, it was not pronounced Maison like a French house but May-son like Mason is pronounced. Why do people do this to their children!

ScarletForYa · 16/06/2017 17:32

Blew.

mummytobemaybe · 16/06/2017 17:53

Yeh the name is pronounced Bler

ZerbaPadnaTigre · 16/06/2017 18:57

I know somebody with a daughter called Rose but spelt Rosé. Her Mum says the same thing about it being the French spelling.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/06/2017 19:03

um what do they think the accent on the e is for?

ZerbaPadnaTigre · 16/06/2017 19:10

It's decorative? I have no idea. We're not close enough that I can ask. Rosé/Rose and Bleu/Blue would be a nice sibling pair though.

KatharinaRosalie · 16/06/2017 19:15

It's like when companies put umlauts on letters, to look I don't know, Scandinavian and edgy? But ö or ü are of course totally different sounds than o or u

IrritatedUser1960 · 16/06/2017 19:21

It will end up being Blue for the rest of his life and spelt wrong on fucking everything. I want to punch parents who do this....sorry but I really do.

troodiedoo · 16/06/2017 19:21

These poor kids, there'll be a thread on here in 20 years "survivors of misspelt names unite".

Lemondrop99 · 16/06/2017 19:31

Agreed Bleu is pronounced bleugh (like cordon bleu)

However if I saw it as a child's name, I'd probably assumed it was badly spelt and pronounced Blue purely because surely nobody would actually mean to call their child Bleugh?!! Confused

It's pronounced Blue and is quite popular in the US

It's not, and I'm not surprised if such an abomination of wrongness is popular in the US, but I challenge to prove it.

StinkPickle · 16/06/2017 19:38

Pronounced bleugh

Not blue.

MissBax · 16/06/2017 19:53

Hilarious! I would say Bleurgh. It's so embarrassing when parents do this.

Iknowacrackingowlsanctuary · 16/06/2017 20:26

I feel like I have found my people!

I keep switching between wanting to punch them for doing this to their DS, as he is the poor one lumbered with the name, and wanting to ask them if they realise what they've done so they can change it before they register him but seeing as they don't know who I am I would probably come across as a quite mad Grin

Would the registrar say anything to them? I think when we registered my DS all they asked was "and how are you spelling that?"

I know someone who has hyphenated their DDs name with Bleu.

I think it's just a way to make them appear quirky and different.

lorisparkle · 16/06/2017 20:32

I know a child called Blue and a child called Bleu. Both where pronounced as 'blue'.

Booboostwo · 16/06/2017 20:45

DS is 2.5yo and bilingual English/French. At the moment he mixes words and his word for the colour blue is the French one so pronounced Bleugh. In the middle of English words it sounds very funny and has in stitches. Poor kid, I have to agree he is called Bleugh.

I also have a random Sixtine story. I met a young girl at a party for French kids who were learning English so everyone was encouraged to speak English. I asked her her name and she said "16" so I gently said "No, not your age, your name" and she repeated "16". Her mom intervened and said "Her name is 16". So I came on MN to say WTF what bad luck to call your child the number 16 in another language when kind MNers introduced me to the name Sixtine.

troodiedoo · 16/06/2017 21:02

I'd like to think the registrar would raise an eyebrow, but they probably hear all kinds of weird shit.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 16/06/2017 21:09

Bleugh

CalmItKermitt · 16/06/2017 21:23

Pyewma-Bleu?
Jagoir-Bleu?
Lyon-Bleu?
Links-Bleu?

Booboostwo · 17/06/2017 06:03

Pyewma-Bleu is reason enough to have another DC.

lizzieoak · 17/06/2017 06:27

I see all kinds of this nonsense at work. Today for example; Lundyn, Makkenzee, and Jaklynn, all young women.

Mrsknackered · 17/06/2017 07:38

I know a Luca Bleu and always think this.
I pronounce it more like 'blergh'
